The Year 2024: Hopes & Despairs

in Politics
Reading Time: 3 mins read

Thank God, we have survived another year of genocide, war, destruction and climate crisis. The passing year of 2024 has been a mixture of hope and despair. It began with some hope as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in favor of South Africa’s case against Israel for committing genocide and ordered Israel to pay reparations to the victims. This landmark decision brought a glimmer of hope for justice and accountability in the face of ongoing atrocities.

The year also saw some progress in the fight against climate change. The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) was held in New York, where world leaders came together to discuss and implement strategies to combat the global crisis. It was heartening to see countries taking concrete steps towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices. The youth-led climate strikes and protests around the world also showed the growing awareness and urgency to address this pressing issue.

However, amidst these glimmers of hope, the passing year has also been marred by devastating events. The ongoing war in Syria continued to claim innocent lives, with no end in sight. The Rohingya crisis in Myanmar also remained unresolved, with thousands of refugees still living in dire conditions. The rise of extremist ideologies and hate crimes around the world also added to the despair.

But as we enter a new year, let us not forget the lessons we have learned from the past. Let us remember the resilience and strength of those who have survived and continue to fight for justice and peace. Let us also acknowledge the efforts of individuals and organizations who have tirelessly worked towards making the world a better place.

One such example is the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which has been providing aid and protection to millions of refugees around the world. Their efforts have been crucial in providing a lifeline to those who have been displaced due to conflict and persecution. The passing year also saw the UNHCR being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their tireless work in protecting the rights of refugees.

The year 2024 also marked the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, a milestone that reminds us of the importance of international cooperation and solidarity. Despite the challenges and setbacks, the UN has played a crucial role in promoting peace, human rights, and sustainable development. As we look towards the future, let us reaffirm our commitment to the principles and values of the UN and work towards a more just and peaceful world.

In the face of ongoing conflicts, it is easy to lose hope and succumb to despair. But let us not forget that every small step towards peace and justice counts. The passing year has shown us that change is possible, and it is up to us to continue striving towards a better world.

As we enter a new year, let us also remember the importance of taking care of our planet. The devastating effects of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, and it is our responsibility to take action. Let us make a conscious effort to reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices in our daily lives.

In conclusion, the passing year of 2024 has been a mix of hope and despair. But as we look towards the future, let us hold on to the hope and continue working towards a better world. Let us remember the resilience and strength of those who have survived and continue to fight for justice and peace. And most importantly, let us never forget the power of unity and cooperation in creating a brighter future for all. Thank God, we have survived another year, and may we continue to do so with determination and hope.
