When Common Sense is Neither

In his second inaugural address, President Donald Trump declared, “It’s the revolution of common sense.” This statement caught the attention of many, as it speaks to the fundamental values and beliefs that shape our society. But what exactly is common sense, and how does it factor into this so-called revolution?

Common sense is often defined as “the ability to think and behave in a reasonable and rational manner based on practical experience and understanding.” It is a form of intuitive knowledge that most people possess and use in everyday situations. Common sense helps us navigate through life and make decisions that seem logical and sensible.

However, in recent times, there has been a growing concern that common sense is no longer as common as it used to be. With the rise of misinformation, fake news, and alternative facts, it seems that common sense is losing its place in our society. This is where President Trump’s revolution of common sense comes into play – a call to go back to basics and embrace rational thinking in a world where it seems to be lacking.

But is it really a revolution of common sense, or is it just a political slogan? The answer to that question is not so simple. While it is certainly encouraging to see a leader advocating for the use of common sense, the truth is that common sense alone is not enough to solve our complex problems. Common sense needs to be combined with critical thinking and analysis to truly make a difference.

Unfortunately, in today’s political climate, common sense is often used as a weapon rather than a tool. It is used to discredit opposing views and push a certain agenda, rather than being used as a means to find common ground and solve issues together. This is where the danger lies – when common sense becomes a tool for division rather than unity.

Some may argue that President Trump’s policies and actions are not always guided by common sense. For instance, his decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic have been met with criticism from experts and the general public alike. These decisions seem to go against common sense and have caused more harm than good.

So, when common sense is not really common sense, what do we do? We need to recognize that common sense is not a fixed concept. It may differ from person to person and can be influenced by personal biases and beliefs. This is why it is crucial to combine common sense with critical thinking and analysis. We need to question our own beliefs and assumptions and be open to different perspectives.

Moreover, common sense also needs to be accompanied by empathy and understanding. We live in a diverse and complex world, and what may seem like common sense to one person may not be so obvious to another. We need to listen to each other and try to understand where others are coming from. Only then can we truly move forward and find solutions that benefit everyone.

In conclusion, while President Trump’s call for a revolution of common sense may sound appealing, it is not enough on its own. We need to go beyond the surface level and combine common sense with critical thinking, empathy, and understanding. Only then can we truly make progress in solving our societal issues. Let us not forget that common sense is not always common, and we must continuously strive to cultivate and improve it in ourselves and others.
