Israel Violated the Gaza Ceasefire From the Start. Why Won’t the Media Tell You That?

Amidst the ongoing violence and tragedy in Gaza, it is crucial that the media shines a light on the root causes of the conflict. While many news outlets have pointed to the recent strikes by Israel as the breaking point of the ceasefire with Hamas, the truth is that Israel has been violating the terms of this agreement from the start. It is time for the media to hold Israel accountable and expose their continual disregard for the ceasefire deal.

The recent strikes on Gaza that have left countless innocent civilians dead and wounded are indeed horrific and require condemnation. However, it is important to acknowledge that this is not a new pattern for Israel. Despite agreeing to a ceasefire with Hamas in 2018, Israel has consistently failed to uphold their end of the deal.

The ceasefire was intended to bring an end to the Israeli blockade on Gaza and allow for the rebuilding of crucial infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and homes. This blockade, in place since 2007, has caused immense suffering for the people of Gaza. The UN has called it a “collective punishment” and a violation of international law. Yet, despite the ceasefire agreement, Israel has continued to restrict the movement of goods and people in and out of Gaza. This has further deepened the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Moreover, Israel’s disregard for the ceasefire also extends to its ongoing military operations in Gaza. Since the 2018 agreement, Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes and incursions into Gaza, causing destruction and loss of life. The UN has documented at least 241 Palestinians killed, including 66 children, and over 16,000 injured in these attacks. This is a blatant violation of the ceasefire deal, which explicitly stated that there should be no more incursions or attacks on Gaza.

So why hasn’t the media taken a closer look at Israel’s violations of the ceasefire? One possible reason could be the close ties between the Israeli government and some major news outlets. The powerful pro-Israel lobby has long exerted influence over media coverage of the conflict, often painting Israel as the victim and not the aggressor.

It is also worth noting that the ceasefire was not a fair agreement to begin with. Hamas, the de facto governing authority in Gaza, was forced to accept a deal that did not address the root causes of the conflict, namely the ongoing occupation and blockade of Gaza. This lack of a just and comprehensive solution has only added to the frustration and desperation of the Palestinian people living in Gaza.

In light of these violations and the skewed media coverage, it is time to hold Israel accountable. The media has a crucial role to play in informing the public and shaping public opinion. By omitting or downplaying Israel’s continual violations of the ceasefire, the media is failing in its duty to present the full picture of the conflict.

Moreover, it is imperative that the international community acts to pressure Israel to abide by the terms of the ceasefire and to finally address the root causes of the conflict. The United States, as a major ally of Israel, must use its influence to hold Israel accountable and push for a just and lasting solution that respects the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people.

As the violence in Gaza continues, let us not forget that this is not a new crisis. Israel has been violating the ceasefire and inflicting suffering on the people of Gaza for years. It is time for the media to speak out and demand accountability. It is time for the international community to take action and put an end to this cycle of violence and injustice. Only then can we hope for a peaceful future for both Israelis and Palestinians.
