With Trump, Smaller Nations Push for Climate Progress—Without the U.S.

Across three days of talks at the SEforAll Global Forum in Barbados, leaders and experts from around the world gathered to discuss the pressing issue of sustainable energy for all. The forum, organized by the United Nations and the World Bank, brought together policymakers, business leaders, and civil society representatives to share their experiences and ideas for achieving universal access to clean, affordable and reliable energy. However, amidst the discussions and collaborations, one topic stood out: the absence of the United States.

The United States, the world’s largest economy and second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has traditionally played a significant role in global climate change and sustainable energy efforts. However, with the current administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, there were notable absences from the US government at the SEforAll Global Forum. This raised concerns about the impact on global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable energy.

Despite the absence of US government representatives, the forum remained focused on finding solutions and paving a path forward. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including energy access for the most vulnerable communities, renewable energy innovation, and the role of the private sector in achieving sustainable energy goals.

One key theme that emerged from the talks was the importance of collaboration and partnership. As Rachel Kyte, CEO of Sustainable Energy for All, stated, “We cannot achieve sustainable energy for all without collaboration and partnerships. We need to work together to find innovative solutions and drive progress towards our goals.”

The forum also highlighted the critical role of the private sector in driving sustainable energy initiatives. Businesses have a significant impact on energy consumption and can play a crucial role in promoting sustainable energy practices. Many companies have already committed to reducing their carbon footprint and investing in clean energy sources. The forum emphasized the need for more businesses to follow suit and join the global effort towards sustainable energy.

Another important aspect of the forum was the focus on energy access for the most vulnerable populations. Despite progress in expanding energy access globally, there are still over 840 million people without electricity, and millions more with unreliable access. The talks emphasized the need for targeted efforts to reach these communities, particularly in developing countries. Sustainable energy solutions, such as off-grid solar systems and microgrids, were highlighted as ways to provide clean and reliable energy to these communities.

The forum also saw the launch of several new initiatives and partnerships aimed at advancing sustainable energy goals. These included the “Cooling for All” initiative, which aims to provide access to affordable and sustainable cooling solutions for all, and the “Clean Cooking Alliance,” which seeks to provide clean cooking solutions to the three billion people worldwide who still rely on traditional, polluting stoves.

Despite the absence of the US government, the forum saw a strong presence of American businesses and civil society organizations. This reinforces the fact that the US remains committed to sustainable energy efforts, even if the government’s position may have changed. It also highlights the crucial role of non-state actors in driving progress towards sustainable energy goals.

In conclusion, the SEforAll Global Forum in Barbados was a testament to the determination and commitment of the international community to achieve universal access to sustainable energy. Despite the absence of the US government, the forum was a resounding success in promoting collaboration, innovation, and partnerships towards this goal. As we look towards the future, it is clear that the global effort towards sustainable energy will continue, with or without the US government’s involvement. We must all work together to pave a path forward and create a sustainable energy future for all.
