Smallholder Farmers Are Not ‘Beneficiaries’, but the ‘Co-Creators of Change’

Reading Time: 2 mins read

Eliud Rugut comes from a long line of farmers, with generations of his family tending to the land and reaping its bountiful harvest. However, despite this strong agricultural background, Eliud’s family had different expectations for him. They wanted him to leave their home and pursue a different career, one that they believed would bring him more success and stability. And so, Eliud followed their wishes and studied economics, eventually finding work in the business and marketing field.

For a while, it seemed like Eliud had made the right decision. He was excelling in his job and making a name for himself in the business world. But then, the unexpected happened. The COVID-19 pandemic struck, and like many others, Eliud found himself without a job. With the economy in turmoil and businesses struggling to survive, Eliud was faced with the harsh reality of unemployment.

Feeling lost and uncertain about his future, Eliud made the difficult decision to move back to his parents’ home. It was a humbling experience for him, having to return to the place he had left in pursuit of a different path. But little did he know, this move would be the turning point in his life.

Back in his childhood home, Eliud found solace in the familiar sights and sounds of the farm. He spent his days helping his parents with their daily tasks, and slowly but surely, he began to rediscover his love for farming. He realized that despite his family’s expectations, his heart had always been drawn to the land and the simple yet fulfilling life it offered.

With this newfound realization, Eliud decided to take a leap of faith and pursue his passion for farming. He started by reviving his family’s farm, using his knowledge of economics to make it more efficient and profitable. He also began to experiment with new farming techniques and technologies, determined to make the most out of the land and its resources.

It wasn’t an easy journey, and there were many challenges along the way. But Eliud’s determination and hard work paid off. Today, his family’s farm is thriving, and he has become a successful and respected farmer in his community. He has also started his own business, selling his farm’s produce and even exporting it to other countries.

Looking back, Eliud realizes that losing his job during the pandemic was a blessing in disguise. It gave him the opportunity to rediscover his true passion and purpose in life. And while his family may have had different expectations for him, they are now proud of the successful farmer he has become.

Eliud’s story is a reminder that sometimes, the path we are expected to take may not be the right one for us. It takes courage and self-discovery to break away from societal norms and pursue our true passions. And in doing so, we may find true happiness and fulfillment, just like Eliud did.

So, to all those who may be facing a similar situation, do not be afraid to follow your heart and chase your dreams. You never know where they may lead you, and it could be the best decision you ever make. As Eliud’s story shows, sometimes going back to our roots can be the key to a successful and fulfilling life.
