I Was A Hostage in Iran. Did My Friends Survive Israel’s Bombing of Our Prison?

Reading Time: 3 mins read

On the early morning of September 12, 2021, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on a prison in Syria, killing at least four people and wounding many more. Among the victims were innocent civilians and political prisoners, including Siamak Namazi, who was held captive for eight years in the same prison. This horrifying incident has sparked international outrage, with many questioning the morality and justification behind such actions.

Siamak Namazi, an Iranian-American businessman, was arrested and imprisoned in Iran on false charges in 2015. For eight long years, he was subjected to inhumane treatment and endured countless days of physical and psychological torture. Despite being innocent, he was kept in solitary confinement and denied basic human rights. However, with the help of international pressure and advocacy, Namazi was finally released in 2021.

But his release was short-lived, as he was once again forced to witness the horrors of the prison he was once held captive in. Israel’s airstrikes were meant to target Hama Central Prison, where Namazi and many others were unjustly imprisoned. This blatant disregard for innocent lives and human rights is unacceptable and goes against the very principles of justice and humanity. As Namazi himself wrote, the airstrikes did not differentiate between the “evil magistrates” and the political prisoners.

It is not just Namazi’s words that speak the truth, but the actions of Israel that clearly show their disregard for human life. The airstrikes not only targeted the prison but also nearby residential areas, causing the death of civilians, including women and children. This is not the first time such attacks have occurred, and it is a clear violation of international law and human rights.

In the midst of this tragedy, one cannot help but question the motives behind Israel’s actions. While the country claims to be fighting terrorism, their actions only result in innocent lives being lost and further fueling the cycle of violence. The airstrikes also violate the sovereignty of Syria and go against the ongoing peace talks and negotiations for stability in the region.

But amidst all this chaos, there is one glimmer of hope – the resilience and bravery of Namazi and other political prisoners who have suffered at the hands of oppressive regimes. Despite their unjust imprisonment and torture, they continue to advocate for justice and speak out against atrocities committed by their captors. Their courage and determination serve as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always a ray of hope.

The international community must unite and raise their voices against such acts of aggression and violence. It is our moral responsibility to stand up for justice and human rights, regardless of race, religion, or political beliefs. The airstrikes on Hama Central Prison are a wake-up call for all of us to take action and demand accountability from those responsible.

Furthermore, the incident also highlights the urgent need for prison reform and the protection of political prisoners. No one should have to endure the horrors that Namazi and others faced behind bars. The international community must work towards ensuring that such atrocities never happen again by holding accountable those responsible for these heinous acts.

In the end, it is the innocent lives lost and the suffering of political prisoners like Namazi that remind us of the importance of valuing human life and striving for peace and justice. The airstrikes on Hama Central Prison are a tragic reminder of the ongoing conflicts and injustices in the world. But let us not lose hope, for as long as there are individuals like Namazi who continue to fight for justice, there is still a chance for change. Let us stand in solidarity with them and demand an end to violence and oppression.
