‘Climate Anxiety is Normal’ – And Women Feel It More

in Society
Reading Time: 3 mins read

In the July edition of The Evidence newsletter, journalist Josephine Lethbridge delves into a topic that has been gaining more attention in recent years – climate anxiety. While the effects of climate change are being felt by everyone, it seems that women are experiencing a higher level of anxiety and fear about the future. But why is this the case? And what can we do about it?

Firstly, it’s important to understand what climate anxiety is. It is a psychological response to the threat of climate change and its potential consequences. This can include feelings of fear, helplessness, and hopelessness about the future. It is a normal reaction to a very real and pressing issue, and it is not something to be dismissed or ignored.

So why do women feel more climate anxiety than men? One reason could be that women are more likely to be affected by the consequences of climate change. In many parts of the world, women are responsible for gathering food, water, and fuel for their families. As climate change leads to droughts, floods, and other extreme weather events, it is women who bear the brunt of these changes. This can lead to a sense of powerlessness and fear for the future.

Another factor could be the societal expectations placed on women. Women are often seen as the caregivers and nurturers, responsible for the well-being of their families and communities. With the looming threat of climate change, it is natural for women to feel a heightened sense of responsibility and anxiety about protecting their loved ones.

Furthermore, women are more likely to be affected by the social and economic impacts of climate change. As resources become scarce and communities are forced to adapt, women may face increased challenges in providing for their families and maintaining their livelihoods. This can lead to a sense of uncertainty and fear about the future.

But it’s not just the practical impacts of climate change that are causing anxiety for women. The media plays a significant role in shaping our perceptions and attitudes towards climate change. Unfortunately, women are often portrayed as victims in the face of environmental disasters, reinforcing the idea that they are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This can further exacerbate feelings of anxiety and helplessness.

So what can we do about this? Firstly, it’s important to acknowledge and validate the feelings of climate anxiety that women may be experiencing. It is a normal response to a very real and pressing issue. By acknowledging these feelings, we can create a safe space for women to express their concerns and fears.

Secondly, we need to empower women to take action. Women are powerful agents of change and have a crucial role to play in addressing climate change. By providing women with the resources and support they need, we can help them to become leaders in their communities and drive positive change.

It’s also important to challenge the gender stereotypes perpetuated by the media. By showcasing the strength and resilience of women in the face of climate change, we can change the narrative and empower women to take action.

Lastly, we need to take collective action to address the root causes of climate change. This includes reducing our carbon footprint, advocating for policy changes, and supporting sustainable practices. By working together, we can create a more sustainable and resilient future for all.

In conclusion, climate anxiety is a normal response to the threat of climate change, and women are feeling it more than men. But by acknowledging and addressing the underlying factors contributing to this anxiety, we can empower women to take action and create a more sustainable future for all. Let’s work together to turn climate anxiety into climate action.
