Kelly Rutherford, best known for her role as Lily van der Woodsen on the hit TV show ‘Gossip Girl’, recently sat down with ET to talk about her iconic character’s style and the one item she kept from the show’s set.
The show, which aired from 2007 to 2012, was known for its fashion-forward characters and their luxurious lifestyles. And Lily van der Woodsen, the matriarch of the wealthy van der Woodsen family, was no exception. Her elegant and sophisticated style was a reflection of her Upper East Side socialite status.
In the interview, Rutherford revealed that she still channels Lily’s style in her own wardrobe. “I think I’ve always been drawn to that kind of classic, timeless look,” she said. “And playing Lily definitely influenced my personal style.”
Rutherford also shared that she kept one item from the show’s set as a memento – a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. “They were the first pair of Louboutins I ever owned,” she said. “And I remember thinking, ‘Wow, these are so beautiful and expensive!’ So I had to keep them.”
But it wasn’t just the designer clothes and accessories that made Lily’s style so iconic. Rutherford also credited the show’s costume designer, Eric Daman, for creating such a memorable look for her character. “Eric is a genius,” she gushed. “He really understood the characters and their personalities, and he brought that to life through their fashion choices.”
Daman, who also worked on the iconic fashion series ‘Sex and the City’, was known for his attention to detail and his ability to use fashion to tell a story. And with ‘Gossip Girl’, he did just that. Lily’s style evolved throughout the show, reflecting her character’s growth and development.
From her signature headbands and statement jewelry to her tailored blazers and elegant dresses, Lily’s style was always on point. And Rutherford’s portrayal of the character was a perfect match. “I loved playing Lily,” she said. “She was such a strong and complex character, and her style was a big part of that.”
Even after the show ended, Lily’s style continued to inspire fashion trends. And Rutherford’s own personal style continues to reflect that influence. “I still love to wear classic pieces with a modern twist,” she shared. “And I think that’s something I learned from playing Lily.”
As for the future of ‘Gossip Girl’, Rutherford is open to the idea of a reboot or reunion. “I think it would be fun to revisit these characters and see where they are now,” she said. “And of course, I would love to wear Lily’s clothes again!”
But for now, Rutherford is keeping busy with her acting career and her role as a mother to her two children. And while she may not be playing Lily van der Woodsen anymore, her timeless style and the memories from the show will always be a part of her.
