Mamdani’s Stand on Genocide is More Important than the Dynamics of Arresting Netanyahu

No leader responsible for mass atrocities enjoys greater impunity on the international stage than Benjamin Netanyahu. This is a harsh reality that has been consistently overlooked by the global community. Despite numerous allegations of human rights abuses and war crimes, Netanyahu continues to evade accountability, thanks to the strange stranglehold of the pro-Israel lobby on the two major political parties in the United States.

The recent assertion by New York City mayoral candidate and front runner Zohran Mamdani on September 13 has once again brought this issue to the forefront. Mamdani boldly stated that “Netanyahu is a war criminal, and should be treated as such.” This statement has sparked a heated debate, with many questioning the influence of the pro-Israel lobby in shaping the US foreign policy towards Israel.

It is no secret that the United States has been a staunch supporter of Israel, providing it with billions of dollars in aid each year. This unwavering support has often been at the expense of the human rights of Palestinians. The US has consistently vetoed resolutions at the United Nations that would hold Israel accountable for its actions, and has turned a blind eye to the atrocities committed by the Israeli government.

This blind support for Israel can be attributed to the powerful pro-Israel lobby in the US, which has a significant influence on both the Democratic and Republican parties. This lobby not only provides significant financial support to political candidates, but also has a strong presence in the media and academia, shaping public opinion and discourse on Israel.

This influence has created a toxic environment where any criticism of Israel is immediately labeled as anti-Semitic. This has allowed Netanyahu to continue his oppressive policies towards Palestinians without facing any consequences. In fact, any attempt to hold Israel accountable is met with severe backlash and accusations of being anti-Israel or anti-Semitic.

The pro-Israel lobby has also successfully suppressed any attempts to bring Netanyahu to justice for his actions. In 2015, the International Criminal Court (ICC) opened a preliminary investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories. However, the US, under pressure from the pro-Israel lobby, threatened to cut funding to the ICC and imposed sanctions on its officials, effectively halting the investigation.

This level of impunity enjoyed by Netanyahu is not only a gross injustice to the Palestinian people, but it also undermines the credibility of the international justice system. It sends a message that those in positions of power can escape accountability for their actions, no matter how grave they may be.

It is high time for the international community to break free from the stranglehold of the pro-Israel lobby and hold Netanyahu accountable for his crimes. The recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is a temporary relief, but it does not address the root cause of the conflict – the ongoing occupation and oppression of Palestinians by the Israeli government.

The United States, as a global superpower, has a moral responsibility to use its influence to promote justice and human rights. It is time for the US to prioritize the rights and dignity of Palestinians over its political alliances. This can only be achieved by breaking free from the influence of the pro-Israel lobby and taking a stand against the atrocities committed by the Israeli government.

In conclusion, the impunity enjoyed by Benjamin Netanyahu on the international stage is a direct result of the pro-Israel lobby’s stranglehold on the US political system. It is time for the global community to demand accountability and justice for the Palestinian people, and for the US to break free from the influence of the pro-Israel lobby and prioritize human rights over political alliances. Only then can we hope for a just and peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
