When Greg Norman announced his departure from LIV Golf as CEO and commissioner last month, it came as a surprise to many. The man who was once at the forefront of one of the most disruptive ventures in sport had suddenly disappeared from the public eye. Now, the 70-year-old Australian golf icon has finally broken his silence and opened up about his exit from LIV Golf after years of “abuse.”

In an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports, Norman revealed the reasons behind his departure and the challenges he faced while leading LIV Golf. He also shared his thoughts on the current state of the sport and his plans for the future.

Norman, who is known for his aggressive and innovative approach to the game, took on the role of CEO and commissioner of LIV Golf in 2019. The venture was set to revolutionize the sport by introducing a new format and bringing in top players from around the world. However, the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to their plans and the tour was unable to take off as expected.

Despite the challenges, Norman remained optimistic and continued to work towards making LIV Golf a success. However, he faced numerous obstacles and “abuse” from within the organization, which ultimately led to his decision to step down.

In the interview, Norman shared, “I have been through a lot in my career, but the abuse I faced at LIV Golf hurt me the most. It was not just from one person, but from multiple individuals within the organization. It became toxic and I could not continue to be a part of it.”

Norman also revealed that the lack of support from the players and the golfing community was another factor that contributed to his exit. He stated, “I had high hopes for LIV Golf and believed in its potential to change the game for the better. But without the support of the players and the golfing community, it was difficult to make it a success.”

Despite the challenges and disappointment, Norman remains positive and is looking forward to the future. He plans to focus on his business ventures and continue to promote the sport of golf. He also hopes to see LIV Golf succeed under new leadership.

“I am proud of what we were able to achieve with LIV Golf in a short period of time. I still believe in its potential and I hope to see it thrive under new leadership. As for me, I am excited to focus on my other business ventures and continue to promote the sport that I love,” Norman shared.

Norman’s departure from LIV Golf may have come as a shock to many, but it has also shed light on the challenges and obstacles faced by those trying to bring about change in the sport. His honesty and openness about his experience at LIV Golf serve as a reminder that the road to success is not always smooth, but it is important to stay true to one’s values and beliefs.

As the golfing world awaits the next chapter of LIV Golf, one thing is certain – Greg Norman’s legacy as a pioneer and innovator in the sport will continue to inspire future generations.
