Ben Stiller says doing comedy is “more challenging” in current political climate

In today’s world, where political correctness and sensitivity seem to be at an all-time high, it can be challenging for comedians to navigate their way through the ever-changing landscape of humor. But according to actor and comedian Ben Stiller, it is more important than ever for them to continue speaking truth to power and being free to say what they want.

In a recent interview with NME, Stiller expressed his thoughts on the current political climate and its impact on comedy. He believes that it has become increasingly difficult for comedians to find the right balance between being funny and not offending anyone.

Stiller, who is known for his roles in comedy films such as Zoolander and Meet the Parents, acknowledges that the world has changed a lot since he first started out in the industry. With the rise of social media and cancel culture, comedians are constantly under scrutiny and have to be careful about what they say.

But despite these challenges, Stiller firmly believes that it is important for comedians to keep pushing boundaries and speaking truth to power. He says, “Comedy has always been a way to shine a light on the absurdities of society and to make people think. It’s important that we continue to do that, even in the face of criticism.”

And he’s not wrong. Throughout history, comedy has been used as a tool to challenge authority and bring attention to important issues. From Charlie Chaplin’s satirical take on Adolf Hitler in The Great Dictator to Jon Stewart’s scathing political commentary on The Daily Show, comedians have always played a crucial role in holding those in power accountable.

But with the current political climate, where tensions are high and people are quick to take offense, it can be daunting for comedians to tackle sensitive subjects. Stiller acknowledges this and says, “It’s definitely more challenging now. You have to be more careful about what you say and how you say it. But that doesn’t mean we should stop trying to make people laugh and think.”

In a time where the world seems to be divided more than ever, comedy has the power to bring people together. It can break down barriers and help us see things from a different perspective. And Stiller believes that comedians have a responsibility to use their platform to do just that.

He says, “Comedy is a powerful tool. It can make people think, it can make people laugh, and it can bring people together. We shouldn’t be afraid to use it to shed light on important issues and challenge those in power.”

Stiller’s comments come at a time when comedians are facing backlash for their jokes and opinions. But he believes that this should not discourage them from speaking their minds. He says, “We have to remember that comedy is subjective. Not everyone will find the same things funny, and that’s okay. But we shouldn’t let fear or criticism stop us from doing what we love.”

In the end, it all comes down to freedom of expression. Comedians should have the freedom to say what they want, as long as it is not inciting hate or violence. And it is up to the audience to decide whether they find it funny or not. As Stiller puts it, “Comedians should have the freedom to fail. We can’t always get it right, but that’s part of the process. And we shouldn’t be afraid to keep trying.”

In a world that is constantly changing and evolving, it is important for comedians to adapt and find new ways to make people laugh. But one thing should remain constant – their ability to speak truth to power and challenge the status quo. As Stiller says, “We need comedians now more than ever. So let’s keep pushing boundaries, making people laugh, and speaking truth to power.”
