Challenging Elites, Defending Democracy: Oxfam’s Amitabh Behar Speaks Out

Reading Time: 2 mins read

Speaking to IPS on the sidelines of the International Civil Society Week in Bangkok (November 1-5), Amitabh Behar, Executive Director of Oxfam International, shared his insights and concerns about the state of the world today. As a passionate human rights advocate, Behar highlighted rising inequality, growing authoritarianism, and the misuse of AI and surveillance as issues that must be addressed urgently. Despite these challenges, however, he expressed optimism, particularly when it comes to the role of young people in shaping a better future for all.

One of the biggest challenges facing the world today is the issue of inequality. According to Oxfam’s latest report, “Time to Care,” the world’s billionaires have more wealth than 4.6 billion people combined. This alarming statistic is a stark reminder of the deep divides that exist within our societies. Behar stressed that this extreme concentration of wealth not only perpetuates poverty and injustice but also undermines democracy.

Moreover, Behar expressed concerns about the growing trend of authoritarianism in many countries. He noted that we are currently witnessing a shrinking of civic spaces and a crackdown on civil society organizations and activists. This is particularly worrying for human rights advocates, who are often the first to be targeted by oppressive regimes. However, Behar is hopeful that the power of collective action and the resilience of civil society will prevail against these challenges.

Another issue that Behar highlighted is the misuse of AI and surveillance. While technology has the potential to improve our lives in many ways, it can also be used as a tool for oppression and control. Behar warned against the use of AI and surveillance to suppress dissent, violate basic rights, and discriminate against marginalized and vulnerable communities.

Despite these challenges, Behar is optimistic about the future. He emphasized that even as civic spaces shrink, young people are stepping up and raising their voices for change. They are using social media and other platforms to challenge the status quo and demand accountability from their leaders. Behar believes that this generation of young activists will play a crucial role in shaping a more just and equal world.

Behar also highlighted the importance of collective action and partnerships in addressing these global issues. He stressed the need for governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector to work together to find solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. Behar acknowledged that finding common ground and collaborating can be challenging, but it is necessary if we want to create meaningful change.

On a positive note, Behar also mentioned the progress that has been made in certain areas. He pointed out that the international community has made significant strides in reducing extreme poverty, improving access to education and healthcare, and promoting gender equality. While there is still a long way to go, these achievements show that positive change is possible.

In conclusion, Amitabh Behar’s message of hope and optimism is an important reminder that despite the challenges facing us, there is still much we can do to create a better world for all. We must continue to fight against inequality, authoritarianism, and the misuse of technology, but we must do so with a positive attitude and a belief that change is possible. And with the collective efforts of young people, civil society, and other stakeholders, we can build a more just and equal society for future generations to come.
