Trump’s Military Occupations of U.S. Cities Cost $473 Million and Rising

Reading Time: 3 mins read

In recent weeks, President Donald Trump has sparked controversy by deploying federal troops to various cities across the United States in an effort to quell protests and civil unrest. This move has been met with fierce opposition and criticism, as it represents a dangerous threat to the principles of democracy and the fundamental rights of American citizens. However, beyond the ethical and moral implications, there is also a staggering financial cost associated with these military occupations.

According to a recent report by The Intercept, Trump’s military occupations of U.S. cities have cost a staggering $473 million and the numbers are only continuing to rise. This astronomical figure is a result of the deployment of federal agents from various agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the U.S. Marshals Service. These agents have been sent to cities such as Portland, Oregon and Washington, D.C., where protests against police brutality and systemic racism have been ongoing.

The majority of these costs are related to personnel expenses, including salaries, overtime pay, and travel costs for the federal agents. In addition, there are also significant expenses for equipment and supplies, such as riot gear, tear gas, and other weapons. This exorbitant amount of money is being spent at a time when the country is facing a severe economic crisis due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

It is important to note that the deployment of federal troops to U.S. cities is not a new phenomenon. In fact, it has been used in the past by both Democratic and Republican administrations. However, what sets Trump’s actions apart is the sheer scale and frequency of these deployments. The president has repeatedly threatened to send federal troops to other cities, such as Chicago and New York, if they do not take more aggressive measures to control protests and crime.

The consequences of these military occupations go far beyond financial costs. The presence of heavily armed federal agents in American cities has escalated tensions and provoked violent clashes with protesters. In Portland, there have been reports of agents using excessive force against peaceful protesters, leading to injuries and arrests. This has only further inflamed the situation and deepened the divide between the government and its citizens.

Moreover, the deployment of federal troops to U.S. cities is a clear violation of the constitutional rights of American citizens. The Fourth Amendment guarantees protection against unreasonable searches and seizures, and the presence of federal agents without the consent of local authorities is a direct violation of this right. This move sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the principles of federalism and state sovereignty.

It is also worth noting that the deployment of federal troops to U.S. cities has been met with widespread opposition, not just from citizens but also from state and local officials. In Portland, the mayor and the governor have strongly condemned the presence of federal agents and have called for their withdrawal. In addition, a group of mayors from major U.S. cities have sent a letter to Congress urging them to pass legislation to prevent the deployment of federal troops without the consent of local officials.

At a time when the country is facing multiple crises, including a global pandemic, economic downturn, and widespread protests against systemic racism, the last thing we need is to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on unnecessary military occupations. The money could be better used to address the pressing needs of the American people, such as providing healthcare, education, and economic relief.

In conclusion, Trump’s campaign to quell dissent by deploying the American military to U.S. cities comes at an immense price, both financially and morally. The exorbitant costs associated with these military occupations are a burden on the already struggling economy and a violation of the constitutional rights of American citizens. It is time for the administration to rethink its approach and focus on addressing the root causes of the protests rather than using force to suppress them. The American people deserve better, and it is up to all of us to demand accountability and stand up for our rights.
