Original ‘Naked Gun’ director slates Liam Neeson reboot: “Everybody’s in it for the money”

David Zucker is a name that may not be familiar to everyone, but his contribution to the world of comedy is undeniable. He is the man behind the first three films in the iconic ‘Naked Gun’ franchise, starring the late Leslie Nielsen. These films were a huge success and are still loved by audiences today. However, when news broke about a possible reboot of the franchise with Liam Neeson, Zucker was less than thrilled. In a recent interview, he expressed his disappointment and criticized the reboot, stating that everyone involved is only in it for the money.

For those who may not know, David Zucker is a filmmaker and screenwriter who has been in the industry for decades. He is best known for his work on the ‘Airplane!’ and ‘Naked Gun’ films, which are considered to be some of the greatest comedy films of all time. Zucker’s unique style of humor and comedic timing made these films instant classics and cemented his place in the comedy hall of fame.

In 1988, Zucker teamed up with his brother Jerry Zucker and friend Jim Abrahams to create the first ‘Naked Gun’ film, ‘The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!’. The film was a spin-off of the short-lived TV series ‘Police Squad!’, which was also created by the trio. Starring Leslie Nielsen as the bumbling detective Frank Drebin, the film was a huge success, grossing over $78 million at the box office. The film’s success led to two more sequels, ‘The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear’ and ‘The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult’, both of which were also directed by Zucker.

These films were not just successful at the box office, but they also received critical acclaim for their clever and hilarious writing, as well as the impeccable comedic performances by the cast. Leslie Nielsen, in particular, became a household name and a comedy legend thanks to his role as Frank Drebin.

So, when news broke about a possible reboot of the franchise with Liam Neeson in the lead role, fans were excited to see the beloved franchise revived. However, David Zucker’s recent comments have left many disappointed and questioning the direction of the reboot.

In an interview with NME, Zucker expressed his disappointment and criticized the reboot, stating that everyone involved is only in it for the money. He stated, “I think it’s just a money grab. It’s a shame because it’s not going to be what the audience wants. It’s going to be something that they think they can make money off of. And I think that’s a mistake.”

Zucker’s comments may come as a surprise to some, as he had previously expressed interest in being involved in the reboot. In fact, he had even written a script for a fourth ‘Naked Gun’ film, but it was never made. So, what changed?

According to Zucker, it’s the lack of respect for the original films and the legacy of Leslie Nielsen. He stated, “I think it’s disrespectful to Leslie Nielsen’s memory. He’s the one who made it all work. He’s the one who made it funny. He’s the one who made it special. And you can’t just replace that with someone else.”

It’s clear that Zucker has deep respect and admiration for Leslie Nielsen and the impact he had on the ‘Naked Gun’ franchise. And it’s understandable that he would feel protective of the legacy of these films. However, it’s also important to note that the reboot is not trying to replace Nielsen’s iconic role, but rather create a new story within the same universe.

Despite his criticism, Zucker did have some positive things to say about Liam Neeson, stating that he is a great actor and could potentially do a good job in the role. However, he also made it clear that he has no interest in seeing the reboot and believes that it will not live up to the original films.

In the end, it’s clear that David Zucker is passionate about the ‘Naked Gun’ franchise and wants to see it respected and honored. While his comments about the reboot may have disappointed some fans, it’s also important to remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And regardless of how the reboot turns out, the original films will always hold a special place in the hearts of fans and continue to make us laugh for years to come.
