Baz Luhrmann is also working on an Elvis stage musical

Reading Time: 2 mins read

Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann is known for his extravagant and visually stunning films, such as “Moulin Rouge!” and “The Great Gatsby”. Recently, he announced that he is now taking his creative talents to the stage with an upcoming Elvis Presley musical.

In an Instagram post, Luhrmann shared a photo of himself with the King of Rock and Roll’s iconic white jumpsuit, along with a caption that read: “I don’t know if I was supposed to announce it but, hey, I just did.” Fans couldn’t contain their excitement as they re-shared the post, speculating about what the musical will entail.

The news comes after Warner Bros. officially gave the green light for the project, which has been in development for years. Luhrmann will be partnering with his wife and collaborator, Catherine Martin, to bring the musical to life. The two have successfully worked together on previous projects, with Martin earning four Oscars for her work on Luhrmann’s films.

While details about the musical are still under wraps, there are some hints about what we can expect. Set in Las Vegas in the late 1960s, the musical will focus on Elvis’ iconic comeback tour. It will feature some of his most beloved hits, as well as never-before-seen footage and photos from the tour.

It’s no surprise that Luhrmann was drawn to Elvis’ story. The legendary singer’s life was filled with glitz, glamour, and tragedy, making it a perfect fit for the filmmaker’s flamboyant style. Luhrmann has also been a lifelong fan of Elvis, making it a passion project for him.

In an interview with NME, Luhrmann shared his excitement about the project, saying, “I’ve always been a huge fan of Elvis Presley. He was one of the first artists that really captured my attention and imagination. I can’t wait to bring his story to the stage in a way that will truly celebrate his legacy.”

This will not be the first time Elvis’ story has been adapted for the stage. In 2005, a jukebox musical titled “All Shook Up” opened on Broadway, featuring the singer’s songs. However, Luhrmann’s musical promises to be a unique and immersive experience, combining his signature style with the timeless music of Elvis.

Fans are eagerly awaiting more details about the musical, including casting announcements and a premiere date. With Luhrmann’s track record of creating magical and unforgettable experiences, it’s safe to say that this musical will be nothing short of spectacular.

So, mark your calendars and get ready to travel back in time to the glory days of Elvis Presley. With Baz Luhrmann at the helm, this musical is sure to be a must-see for fans of both the King of Rock and Roll and the filmmaker. As Luhrmann himself said, “Hey, I just did” announce it, and we couldn’t be more excited.
