“We have a saying here in Ukraine now – ‘young people meet at their friends’ funerals rather than at weddings.’ It’s sad, but very true.” These words from Iryna Yakova, a 29-year-old Ukrainian, paint a grim picture of the current situation in her country. As Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its fifth year, Iryna reflects on how her life and the lives of many other young Ukrainians have been drastically changed.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia began in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea, a peninsula in southern Ukraine. This was followed by a pro-Russian separatist movement in eastern Ukraine, leading to a full-scale war between the two countries. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and has left many more displaced and struggling to survive.
Iryna, like many other young Ukrainians, has been directly affected by the war. She recalls how her life was before the conflict, filled with hope and dreams for the future. She had just graduated from university and was excited to start her career in marketing. But as the war broke out, her dreams were put on hold.
“I remember the day when everything changed. It was like a nightmare that I couldn’t wake up from,” Iryna says. “Suddenly, my country was at war, and I had to put my life on hold to help my family and my community.”
Iryna’s hometown, located in eastern Ukraine, was one of the first to be affected by the conflict. The once peaceful streets were now filled with the sounds of explosions and gunfire. Schools and businesses were forced to shut down, and many families were left without a source of income.
“I had to leave my job and join the volunteer efforts to help those in need. It was a difficult decision, but I knew I had to do something to make a difference,” Iryna shares.
As the war continued, Iryna’s life became a constant struggle. She, along with many other young Ukrainians, had to adapt to a new reality where survival was the main priority. The once vibrant and bustling city was now a shadow of its former self.
“Every day, I wake up to the sound of shelling and the fear of not knowing what the day will bring. It’s a constant battle to stay positive and keep going,” Iryna says.
But despite the challenges, Iryna and many other young Ukrainians have not lost hope. They have come together to support each other and their country in any way they can. From volunteering at hospitals and shelters to organizing fundraisers and awareness campaigns, they have shown resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
“We have seen the worst of humanity in this war, but we have also seen the best. The unity and determination of the Ukrainian people have been truly inspiring,” Iryna says with pride.
As the conflict enters its fifth year, Iryna and her fellow Ukrainians continue to fight for their country’s sovereignty and a peaceful future. They refuse to let the war define them and are determined to rebuild their country and their lives.
“We may have lost many things in this war, but we have gained something much more valuable – a sense of unity and purpose. We will not let this war defeat us,” Iryna says with determination.
Despite the ongoing conflict, Iryna remains hopeful for the future. She believes that the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people will prevail, and one day, they will be able to meet at weddings rather than funerals.
“We may have a saying now that young people meet at funerals, but I am confident that one day, we will have a new saying – young people meet at weddings, celebrating a peaceful and prosperous Ukraine,” Iryna says with a smile.
The war in Ukraine may have changed the lives of many young people, but it has also brought out their strength and resilience. They have shown the world that even in the darkest of times, hope and unity can prevail. As the conflict continues, let us remember the sacrifices and struggles of the Ukrainian people and stand in solidarity with them in their fight for peace and freedom.
