Kristi Noem’s Removal Was About Optics, Not Policy

Reading Time: 2 mins read

In the fast-paced world of politics, there are often individuals who rise to power with great promise and potential, only to later fall from grace in a shocking turn of events. Such has been the case for Kristi Noem, the Governor of South Dakota, whose tenure can be described as one of the biggest flameouts of President Donald Trump’s second term.

When Governor Noem first took office in 2019, she was hailed as a rising star in the Republican party. With her strong conservative beliefs and charismatic personality, she quickly caught the attention of Trump and his administration. She was seen as a potential ally and a possible contender for higher office in the future.

However, as Noem’s tenure progressed, her star began to dim and her relationship with the Trump administration soured. One of the biggest issues that led to this downfall was her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the rising number of cases and deaths in South Dakota, Noem refused to implement any state-wide measures such as mask mandates or restrictions on businesses. She even went as far as to welcome large gatherings, including the infamous Sturgis motorcycle rally, which has been linked to a surge in COVID-19 cases across the country.

Noem’s refusal to take necessary actions to protect her state’s citizens earned her criticism from health experts and even other Republican governors. As the pandemic continued to ravage the country, it became increasingly clear that her approach was not only ineffective but also dangerous. This eventually led to a strained relationship with the Trump administration, who was pushing for a more aggressive response to the crisis.

Furthermore, Noem’s failure to manage the pandemic in her state had significant economic consequences. The lack of restrictions and precautions led to outbreaks in major industries, such as meatpacking plants, which had to shut down, causing disruptions in the food supply chain. This not only hurt the South Dakota economy but also had a ripple effect on the national level.

As the pandemic highlighted her shortcomings as a leader, other issues also surfaced during Noem’s tenure. She faced criticism for her handling of the Keystone XL pipeline project, which was expected to bring billions of dollars in revenue to the state. Noem supported the project, but it faced numerous legal challenges, and ultimately, President Biden revoked its permit, further damaging the relationship between Noem and the administration.

In addition to these policy failures, Noem’s personal actions have also drawn negative attention. She used her position to secure a $1 million state contract for a personal political consultant, and also purchased a $1.1 million private airplane with state funds. These actions have raised concerns about her ethics and have led to investigations by state lawmakers.

Ironically, despite being a vocal supporter of Trump, Noem was not included in his list of potential 2024 presidential candidates. This could be seen as a significant snub, given that her fellow Republican governors, such as Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott, were mentioned as possible contenders. This further highlights her diminishing influence and standing within the party.

In conclusion, Governor Noem’s tenure has been a disappointing one, marked by failures and controversies. She had the opportunity to make a positive impact on South Dakota and earn a place in national politics, but instead, she succumbed to personal and political interests, ultimately leading to her downfall. It is a cautionary tale for future leaders, reminding them that the pursuit of power and personal ambitions should never overshadow their duty to serve and protect the people they represent.
