Youth Voice on SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015, with the aim of creating a better and more sustainable world for all. Among these goals is SDG 16, which focuses on promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. As we strive towards achieving this goal, it is important to recognize the crucial role that youth play in promoting peace, justice and strong institutions.

Youth, defined as individuals between the ages of 15 and 24, make up a significant portion of the world’s population. In fact, according to the United Nations, there are currently 1.8 billion young people in the world, making up 25% of the global population. This means that the actions and voices of youth have the power to shape the future of our world.

One of the key aspects of SDG 16 is promoting peaceful and inclusive societies. In a world where conflicts and violence are prevalent, it is essential to involve youth in promoting peace and preventing violence. Youth are often the most affected by conflicts, and their voices and perspectives are crucial in finding sustainable solutions. Through their creativity, energy and passion, youth have the potential to bring about positive change and promote peace in their communities.

One example of youth-led initiatives promoting peace is the Youth, Peace and Security agenda, which was adopted by the United Nations Security Council in 2015. This agenda recognizes the important role of youth in peacebuilding and calls for their meaningful participation in decision-making processes. It also emphasizes the need to address the specific needs and challenges faced by young people in conflict-affected areas. By involving youth in peacebuilding efforts, we can create a more inclusive and sustainable peace.

In addition to promoting peaceful societies, SDG 16 also focuses on providing access to justice for all. This includes ensuring equal access to legal services, promoting the rule of law, and reducing corruption and bribery. Youth have a crucial role to play in this aspect of the goal as well. As the future leaders and decision-makers, it is essential for youth to understand the importance of justice and the rule of law. By educating and empowering youth, we can create a generation that values justice and works towards creating a more just and equal society.

Moreover, youth are often at the forefront of advocating for social justice and human rights. They are passionate about addressing issues such as discrimination, inequality and human rights violations. Through their activism and advocacy, youth have the power to bring about positive change and hold institutions accountable for their actions. This is crucial in building strong and effective institutions that serve the needs of all individuals.

Youth also have a unique perspective and innovative ideas that can contribute to the development of strong institutions. With their knowledge of technology and social media, youth can help bridge the gap between institutions and the communities they serve. They can also bring fresh ideas and solutions to address the challenges faced by institutions, such as lack of transparency and accountability.

In conclusion, the youth voice is crucial in achieving SDG 16 and creating a more peaceful, just and inclusive world. As we work towards building a better future, it is essential to involve youth in decision-making processes and give them a platform to share their ideas and perspectives. By empowering and supporting youth, we can create a generation that is committed to promoting peace, justice and strong institutions. Let us all join hands and work towards achieving SDG 16, for the betterment of our world and future generations.
