Geno Auriemma Sees Something Not Often Associated With UConn 6 Days Before Selection Sunday

With 40 years of coaching experience with the Huskies, Geno Auriemma has seen it all. From 12 national championships to 11 undefeated regular seasons, Auriemma has established himself as one of the greatest coaches in the history of women’s college basketball. But even with all this success, Auriemma remains humble and grounded, never letting rankings or NCAA Tournament seeding affect his coaching approach. And now, with a new statistic in play, Auriemma is once again proving why he is a true legend in the sport.

For the first time since Week 9, UConn is not the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation. The new statistic, known as the NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool), has placed the Huskies at No. 2, behind Stanford. This may come as a surprise to many, considering UConn’s dominant 24-1 record and impressive wins against top-ranked teams. But for Auriemma, this new ranking is just another number, and he is not fazed by it at all.

In fact, just six days before Selection Sunday, Auriemma sees something not often associated with UConn – a sense of underdog mentality. And this is exactly what he wants from his team. In a recent press conference, he said, “I think it’s good for us to be in that position where we’re not the overwhelming favorite. It’s something that we’re not used to, but it’s good to be in that position and see how we handle it.”

This statement perfectly encapsulates Auriemma’s coaching philosophy. He thrives on challenges and uses them to motivate his players. And with this new ranking, Auriemma has found a way to keep his team hungry and focused heading into the NCAA Tournament.

But what is it about this new statistic that has Auriemma so intrigued? The NET is a more comprehensive metric that takes into account a team’s strength of schedule, offensive and defensive efficiency, and game results. And while some may argue that UConn’s strength of schedule is not as tough as other top-ranked teams, Auriemma sees it as an opportunity to prove their worth.

He knows that his team has faced adversity and overcome it throughout the season. From injuries to facing tough opponents, the Huskies have shown resilience and determination. And Auriemma believes that this will only make them stronger as they head into the NCAA Tournament.

But it’s not just about the numbers for Auriemma. It’s about the journey and the lessons his team learns along the way. He understands that rankings and seeding can change in an instant, but the lessons his players learn on the court will stay with them for a lifetime.

And this is what sets Auriemma apart from other coaches. He doesn’t just focus on winning games; he focuses on developing his players as individuals and as a team. He instills values such as hard work, discipline, and perseverance, which go beyond the basketball court.

As Selection Sunday approaches, Auriemma and his team are ready for whatever comes their way. They are not concerned about rankings or seeding; they are focused on playing their best basketball and making a run for the national championship.

And while Auriemma may not show it, he is quietly relishing in the underdog role. He knows that his team is capable of achieving greatness, and this new ranking only adds fuel to their fire.

So, as UConn prepares for the NCAA Tournament, one thing is certain – Geno Auriemma will continue to lead his team with the same passion and determination that has made him a coaching legend. And who knows, maybe this new statistic will be just the motivation the Huskies need to bring home another national championship.
