The anticipation and excitement of NFL free agency is always a major highlight for football fans. This year, however, the drama and action kicked off even before the official start of free agency on Wednesday at 4pm ET. The NFL’s legal tampering period began on Monday, and we have already witnessed some major moves and signings that have left many in shock and awe.
The frenzy of free agency has seen some of the top players in the league come off the board, changing the landscape of several teams. With most of the big names already signed, it’s time to take a closer look at the winners and losers of this year’s free agency, as we hand out our 2021 NFL Free Agency Awards.
Biggest Bargain: Hunter Henry to New England Patriots
The New England Patriots have always been known for their shrewd moves in free agency, and this year was no different. The signing of tight end Hunter Henry to a three-year, $37.5 million deal is a major steal for the Patriots. Henry, one of the top tight ends in the league, was expected to command a much higher price tag, but the Patriots managed to land him at a much lower cost.
Henry’s addition to the Patriots’ offense gives them a much-needed weapon at the tight end position. He has the ability to stretch the field and create mismatches for the defense. With the departure of Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots have been missing a strong presence at tight end, and Henry is the perfect fit for their system. Plus, at just 26 years old, he has the potential to be a long-term solution for the Patriots.
Best Overall Haul: Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have been one of the most active teams in free agency, and it’s paying off big time. After years of struggling, the Browns have finally put together a talented roster that can compete at the highest level. The addition of safety John Johnson III, tight end Austin Hooper, and offensive tackle Jack Conklin last year proved to be valuable, and this year the Browns have continued to build on that foundation.
The Browns have made a splash by signing edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year deal. They also added safety Troy Hill and defensive tackle Malik Jackson, making their defense even more formidable. On the offensive side of the ball, they have beefed up their receiving corps by signing wide receiver Rashard Higgins and tight end David Njoku to one-year deals.
Overall, the Browns have done an excellent job of addressing their needs and adding depth to their roster. With their key players returning from injury, the Browns are well-positioned to make a deep playoff run in the upcoming season.
Biggest Surprise: Curtis Samuel to Washington Football Team
The Washington Football Team has been making some unexpected moves this off-season, but none more surprising than the signing of wide receiver Curtis Samuel to a three-year, $34.5 million deal. Samuel had a breakout season with the Carolina Panthers last year, and many expected him to receive a big payday in free agency. However, his signing with the Washington Football Team caught many by surprise.
But it’s a move that makes a lot of sense for both sides. Samuel reunites with his former coach Ron Rivera in Washington, and he adds another dynamic playmaker to an offense that already includes Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson. His versatility and ability to line up in the slot, out wide, and in the backfield will give the Washington Football Team’s offense a major boost. With Samuel joining their revamped defense, the Washington Football Team is poised to make a strong push for the NFC East title.
Comeback Player: Ryan Fitzpatrick to Washington Football Team
The Washington Football Team continues to make headlines with their free agency moves, and the signing of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is another one that caught everyone by surprise. The 38-year-old journeyman has bounced around the league but is a proven veteran who has had a solid career. After playing for eight different teams in his 16-year career, Fitzpatrick now joins the Washington Football Team, where he will compete for the starting role with Taylor Heinicke.
Fitzpatrick has shown that he still has plenty left in the tank, as he led the Miami Dolphins to a 10-6 record last season. He brings a wealth of experience and leadership to a young and talented team, and his infectious personality will be a bonus for the Washington Football Team’s
