Syria’s Mobile Cultural Bus: Championing Cultural Justice, Delivering Art and Literature to Children of War

In the Al-Azraq camp in northern Syria, amidst the ruins and chaos of war, a beacon of hope and creativity shines through. 10-year-old Abeer Al-Qaddour sits, engrossed in a colorful book with intense focus and curiosity. Nearby, a bus stands proudly, adorned with the words ‘The Cultural Bus’. A group of children have gathered around it, their faces filled with visible joy as they engage in collective drawing activities for the very first time.

The Al-Azraq camp, home to thousands of refugees, has been a place of unimaginable hardships and struggles. The children here have faced more trauma and challenges than any child should ever have to. But today, the Cultural Bus has brought a much-needed ray of light and joy into their lives.

The Cultural Bus, organized and operated by the non-profit organization, ‘Empowering Children in Conflict’, has been visiting different refugee camps, providing a platform for children to express themselves through art and creativity. The bus is equipped with art supplies, books, and games, and is staffed by trained volunteers who facilitate various activities for the children.

The founder of Empowering Children in Conflict, Yasmin Khader, believes in the transformative power of art. She says, “Art is a universal language that transcends all barriers. It provides a safe space for children to express themselves, heal from trauma, and build resilience.” The Cultural Bus aims to promote peace, healing, and resilience in children affected by conflict and war.

As the children gather around the bus, they are greeted by volunteers with warm smiles and open arms. They are welcomed into a space where they can forget about their hardships and just be children. The bus is not just a means of transportation, but a symbol of hope and opportunity for these children.

The activities on the bus range from painting and drawing to storytelling and music. The children are encouraged to express themselves freely and let their imaginations run wild. For many, it is the first time they have been able to engage in such activities since being displaced from their homes. Abeer, who had never held a paintbrush before, is now creating a beautiful masterpiece with the help of a volunteer. Her smile and laughter are infectious, spreading to the other children around her.

The Cultural Bus also organizes workshops and sessions for the children, focusing on important topics such as peace-building, conflict resolution, and teamwork. Through these activities, the children learn valuable skills that will help them cope with the challenges they face and become agents of change in their communities.

For Abeer and the other children in the Al-Azraq camp, the Cultural Bus has become a symbol of hope and a source of joy in their lives. It has given them a sense of normalcy and provided them with a safe space to heal and express themselves. The bus has also brought a sense of community, as the children come together and form friendships through their shared experiences.

The impact of the Cultural Bus goes beyond just the children. It has also brought joy and purpose to the volunteers who run it. One volunteer, Hana, shares, “Working with these children has been a life-changing experience for me. Seeing the smiles on their faces and the spark in their eyes is the most rewarding feeling.”

The Cultural Bus has become an important tool in promoting peace and healing in the Al-Azraq camp. It serves as a reminder that in the darkest of times, there is still hope and beauty to be found. Through the simple act of providing a space for children to express themselves, the Cultural Bus is making a profound impact on the lives of these young refugees.

As the bus prepares to leave the camp, Abeer runs up to the volunteer who helped her with her painting. She gives them a big hug and says, “Thank you for making me forget about the war and just be a kid again.” And in that moment, the true power of the Cultural Bus is evident – to bring happiness, hope, and healing to the lives of these children caught in the midst of conflict.
