Protesting the Smash-and-Grab Presidency With Nikhil Pal Singh

In these politically tumultuous times, it seems the act of protest has become a necessary tool in the fight against injustice and corruption. With the rise of a “smash-and-grab presidency,” as it has been deemed, many citizens have taken to the streets in order to voice their grievances and demand change. But how effective are these efforts, and where do they go from here?

To explore these questions and more, I sat down with Nikhil Pal Singh, a professor of social and cultural analysis at New York University and author of “Race and America’s Long War,” to discuss the current state of protest and the potential for building bigger coalitions.

Singh, who has been an active voice in the fight against racial and economic inequality, believes that in today’s political climate, building coalitions is crucial. “It’s not enough to simply protest or resist,” he says, “we must also work towards forging alliances and collaborations with others who share our concerns.”

He points out that this can be a challenging task, especially in an increasingly hostile environment. “The current administration has made it clear that it will not tolerate dissent,” Singh says. “They have taken steps to suppress and undermine any form of opposition, making it difficult to organize and mobilize effectively.”

But despite these obstacles, Singh remains optimistic and believes there is still hope for building bigger and stronger coalitions. “We have seen successful examples of grassroots movements throughout history, from the civil rights movement to the fight against apartheid,” he says. “It takes time, effort, and determination, but it is possible.”

One key aspect Singh emphasizes is the need for intersectionality in coalition building. “We cannot fight for one cause without acknowledging and addressing the interconnectedness of other issues,” he explains. “We must recognize and support the struggles of marginalized communities, whether it’s for racial justice, gender equality, or environmental protection.”

He also stresses the importance of remaining focused on long-term goals and avoiding the trap of short-term wins. “We cannot let ourselves become complacent with small victories,” Singh says. “We must keep our eyes on the bigger picture and continue to push for meaningful and lasting change.”

In the face of a president who has shown a blatant disregard for democratic values and the rights of marginalized communities, it is easy to feel discouraged and overwhelmed. But Singh urges the importance of not losing sight of the power of collective resistance.

“We must remember that protest is not just about making our voices heard, it’s also about building solidarity and creating a sense of community,” he says. “When we come together and stand in solidarity, we become a force that cannot be ignored.”

Singh also acknowledges the role of the media and its impact on public perception of protests and social movements. “The media has the power to shape the narrative and influence public opinion,” he says. “It is crucial for journalists and media outlets to accurately and objectively report on protests, rather than portray them as violent or disruptive.”

As our conversation comes to an end, Singh leaves us with a message of hope and resilience. “Protest is a fundamental right and a necessary tool for bringing about change,” he says. “We must continue to raise our voices, build coalitions, and work towards a better and more just society for all.”

In the face of challenges and adversity, Nikhil Pal Singh’s words serve as a reminder that the fight for justice and equality is far from over. It is up to us, as citizens, to come together and continue to demand a better future for ourselves and future generations. The time for action is now, and it is through building bigger and stronger coalitions that we can achieve real and lasting change.
