Trump Wanted to Replicate His Venezuela “Success” in Iran. What Has It Even Looked Like?

In the shifting landscape of global politics, one country in particular has been at the center of controversy and international attention: Venezuela. A once-prosperous nation, Venezuela has been plagued by economic and political turmoil in recent years, and the situation has only intensified under the leadership of President Nicolás Maduro. In response, the United States, under the administration of former President Donald Trump, took a bold and controversial approach by carrying out regime change without a change in regime. Now, with Trump out of office, the question remains: what does this mean for Venezuela and its people?

The events in Venezuela over the past few years have been nothing short of tumultuous. In 2013, after the death of long-time leader Hugo Chávez, Maduro took the reins of the country. However, his leadership has been riddled with accusations of corruption and human rights violations. As a result, the country has descended into a deep economic crisis, with inflation skyrocketing and basic goods becoming scarce. This has led to widespread protests and unrest among the Venezuelan people.

In this context, the United States, along with other countries, has been vocal about their opposition to Maduro’s regime. The Trump administration, in particular, took a strong stance against the Venezuelan government, imposing economic sanctions and recognizing Juan Guaidó, leader of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, as the legitimate interim president of Venezuela. The goal was to force Maduro out of power and install Guaidó as the new leader of the country.

This approach, known as regime change without a change in regime, was a controversial one. It essentially meant overthrowing the existing government without a clear plan for what would come next. The United States has a history of intervention in Latin American countries, and many feared that this move would only prolong the suffering of the Venezuelan people.

Despite the criticism, the Trump administration remained determined to see their plan through. However, as Maduro clung to power and the situation in Venezuela continued to deteriorate, it became clear that this regime change was not going as smoothly as anticipated. Trump’s policies seemed to have little effect on Maduro’s hold on power, and the Venezuelan people continued to suffer.

Now, with Trump out of office and President Joe Biden at the helm, there is speculation about what the future holds for Venezuela. There were concerns that the Biden administration would continue with the same aggressive approach towards Maduro, but in a recent interview, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the US would pursue a more “calibrated” strategy towards Venezuela. This could mean a shift towards diplomacy and working with international partners to find a solution to the crisis.

The change in tone from the US is a welcome development for many, as it signals a potential shift towards a more peaceful resolution. However, the question remains: what about the impact of Trump’s regime change without a change in regime? The truth is, it’s too early to say. The situation in Venezuela is complex and multifaceted, and any solution will require careful consideration and collaboration from all parties involved.

One thing is clear, though – Trump’s approach has not achieved what it set out to do. Maduro remains in power, and the Venezuelan people continue to suffer. The lesson here is that regime change without a change in regime is not a quick fix solution. It requires a long-term, multi-faceted approach that takes into consideration the complexities of the country and its people.

Moreover, the events in Venezuela have also highlighted the need for the international community to come together and find a sustainable solution. Venezuela is not the only country facing political and economic crisis, and the actions of one powerful nation should not determine the fate of another. It is essential for countries to work together towards peace and stability, rather than resorting to unilateral actions that can have devastating consequences.

In the end, time will tell what the Trump’s approach to Venezuela will mean for the country. What we do know is that it has not brought about the desired results, and it’s time for a new approach. The people of Venezuela have suffered enough, and it is our responsibility as global citizens to support them in finding a way out of this crisis. Let us hope that the Biden administration will take a more diplomatic and collaborative approach towards Venezuela, which will ultimately lead to a brighter future for its people.
