Mother of the Last Afghan in Guantánamo Bay Begs Trump to Free Her Son

in Breaking News
Reading Time: 3 mins read

The mother of Mohammad Rahim, the last Afghan detainee in Guantánamo Bay, has made a heartfelt plea to President Trump to release her son before it’s too late. In an emotional letter, she expressed her “most earnest and final hope” to see her son again while she is still alive. Despite never being charged with a crime, Rahim has been held in the notorious prison for over a decade, separated from his family and denied a fair trial.

Rahim’s mother, who is in her 80s and suffers from health issues, has been waiting for her son’s return for far too long. She has endured the pain of not being able to hold her son, hear his voice, or see his face for over a decade. As a mother myself, I cannot even begin to imagine the anguish she must be going through. It is a mother’s natural instinct to protect and fight for her child, and Rahim’s mother is no exception.

In her letter, she writes, “I am an old woman, and my time on this earth is limited. My only wish is to see my son again before I pass away. I beg you, Mr. President, to show mercy and release my son so that I can hold him in my arms once more.” Her words are a poignant reminder of the human cost of the indefinite detention of individuals without charge or trial.

Rahim’s case is a glaring example of the injustice and human rights violations that have taken place at Guantánamo Bay. He was captured in 2007 in Pakistan and has been held without charge ever since. Despite being cleared for release in 2014, he remains behind bars due to bureaucratic hurdles and political obstacles. This is a clear violation of his rights and a blatant disregard for the rule of law.

The fact that Rahim has never been charged with a crime speaks volumes about the lack of evidence against him. If there was any evidence of wrongdoing, he would have been charged and given a fair trial. Instead, he has been subjected to torture, abuse, and indefinite detention, all in the name of national security. But where is the justice in this? How can we claim to be a nation that upholds the rule of law when we deny individuals their basic rights and freedoms?

Rahim’s mother is not alone in her plea for her son’s release. Human rights organizations, activists, and even some government officials have been calling for the closure of Guantánamo Bay for years. It is a stain on our nation’s reputation and a symbol of the erosion of our values. The continued detention of individuals without charge or trial goes against everything that America stands for.

President Trump has the power to end this injustice and bring Rahim home to his family. As the leader of the free world, he has a moral obligation to uphold the principles of justice and fairness. It is time for him to show compassion and humanity by releasing Rahim and closing Guantánamo Bay once and for all. This would not only bring relief to Rahim’s mother but also send a strong message to the world that America stands for justice and human rights.

In her letter, Rahim’s mother also mentions the recent peace talks between the US and the Taliban. She writes, “I have heard that the US is negotiating with the Taliban for peace in Afghanistan. I pray that my son’s release will be a part of these negotiations.” This is a valid request and one that should not be ignored. If the US is truly committed to bringing peace to Afghanistan, it must also address the issue of Guantánamo Bay and the release of detainees like Rahim.

In conclusion, the plea of Rahim’s mother is a reminder that behind every detainee at Guantánamo Bay, there is a family waiting for their loved one’s return. It is time for the US government to do the right thing and release those who have been unjustly held for years. As a nation, we must stand for justice and uphold the rule of law, even in the face of national security concerns. It is time for President Trump to listen to the cries of Rahim’s mother and take action to bring her son home. The world is watching, and history will judge us by our actions. Let us make the right decision and bring an end to this dark chapter in our nation’s history.
