Police bring in emergency powers as youths get out of hand in Swansea

Reading Time: 2 mins read

South Wales Police has taken a significant step in ensuring the safety and security of Swansea city centre by introducing a dispersal order. This new measure aims to tackle anti-social behaviour and create a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors alike. The move comes after numerous complaints from local businesses and residents about the increasing levels of disorder in the city centre.

Under the dispersal order, police officers have the power to disperse groups of two or more people causing or likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to others. This includes individuals engaging in aggressive or intimidating behaviour, using foul language, or consuming alcohol in public areas. The order also authorizes officers to remove anyone under the age of 16 from the city centre after 9 pm if they are not accompanied by a responsible adult.

This new measure is a proactive approach by the South Wales Police to address the root causes of anti-social behaviour and prevent it from escalating further. It is not intended to target law-abiding citizens but rather to deter those who engage in disruptive and harmful activities in the city centre. The dispersal order will be in effect for a period of six months and will be regularly reviewed to ensure its effectiveness.

Chief Inspector Gareth Morgan, who is leading the initiative, believes that the dispersal order will have a significant impact on reducing anti-social behaviour in Swansea city centre. He stated, “We have received numerous complaints from residents and businesses about the increasing levels of disorder in the city centre. This is not a problem that can be solved by the police alone, and we need the cooperation of the community to make a real difference. The introduction of the dispersal order is a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will take action to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.”

The South Wales Police have been working closely with local authorities and community groups to address the underlying issues that contribute to anti-social behaviour. They have also launched a social media campaign to raise awareness of the dispersal order and encourage the public to report any incidents of anti-social behaviour. The police are also providing support to vulnerable individuals who may be at risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour.

The introduction of the dispersal order has been welcomed by local businesses and residents who have expressed their relief at finally seeing action being taken to address the issue. Many have reported feeling unsafe in the city centre, and some businesses have even suffered financial losses due to the disruptive behaviour of a few individuals. The dispersal order is seen as a proactive and necessary step towards creating a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone.

Furthermore, the dispersal order is not a standalone measure but is part of a broader strategy by the South Wales Police to improve community safety. This includes increasing police presence in the city centre, working with partners to provide support and interventions for those involved in anti-social behaviour, and engaging with the community to address their concerns and implement long-term solutions.

In conclusion, the introduction of the dispersal order by the South Wales Police is a positive and proactive step towards making Swansea city centre a safer and more welcoming place. It sends a clear message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated, and the police are committed to working with the community to address this issue. With the support and cooperation of the public, we can all make a difference in creating a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone.
