Ex-Chiefs QB Pitches Ideal Travis Kelce Successor With No.9 Pick

Reading Time: 3 mins read

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a bold move by locking in Travis Kelce for his 14th season in the NFL. The star tight end has been a crucial part of the Chiefs’ success in recent years and there’s no doubt that he will continue to play a primary role in the team’s offense. However, there are some who believe that the Chiefs should have a solid contingency plan in place for when Kelce eventually decides to hang up his cleats.

One former Chiefs quarterback, in particular, has an interesting suggestion for who could be the ideal successor to Kelce. In a recent interview, Trent Green, who played for the Chiefs from 2001 to 2006, pitched the idea of drafting a tight end with the team’s No.9 pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

Green believes that the Chiefs should consider drafting Florida tight end Kyle Pitts, who is widely regarded as one of the top prospects in this year’s draft class. Pitts has been compared to Kelce in terms of his size, athleticism, and playmaking ability, making him a potential successor to the Chiefs’ star tight end.

While some may see this as a controversial move, Green makes a compelling case for why the Chiefs should seriously consider drafting Pitts. He points out that Kelce is 31 years old and although he is still playing at an elite level, it’s important for the Chiefs to have a plan in place for when he eventually retires.

Green also highlights the fact that the Chiefs’ offense heavily relies on the tight end position, with Kelce being the primary target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Having a talented and versatile tight end like Pitts waiting in the wings would ensure that the Chiefs’ offense remains dynamic and explosive even after Kelce’s departure.

But it’s not just about having a contingency plan for the future. Green also believes that Pitts could make an immediate impact for the Chiefs in the upcoming season. With his size and athleticism, Pitts could create mismatches for opposing defenses and provide another weapon for Mahomes to utilize in the passing game.

Of course, there are other areas of need for the Chiefs, such as the offensive line and the defense. But Green argues that the Chiefs have enough depth and talent in those areas to address them in later rounds of the draft. He believes that drafting Pitts would be a bold and strategic move that could pay off in the long run for the Chiefs.

It’s worth noting that the Chiefs have not drafted a tight end in the first round since 1978, when they selected Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez. But with the success that Kelce has had for the team, it’s clear that the tight end position holds a lot of value for the Chiefs. And with Pitts being compared to Gonzalez and Kelce, it’s hard to ignore the potential impact he could have for the team.

Of course, this is all just speculation at this point. The Chiefs may have a different plan in mind for the No.9 pick, or they may not even consider drafting a tight end in the first round. But Green’s suggestion has certainly sparked some interesting discussions among Chiefs fans and analysts.

In the end, the decision lies with the Chiefs’ front office and coaching staff. But one thing is for sure, the Chiefs are always looking to improve and stay ahead of the competition. And if drafting Kyle Pitts is the way to do that, then it’s definitely a move worth considering.

In conclusion, while Travis Kelce is still the undisputed leader of the Chiefs’ tight end group, it’s important for the team to have a plan in place for the future. And with the suggestion of drafting Kyle Pitts, the Chiefs could potentially have another elite tight end waiting in the wings. Only time will tell if this move will come to fruition, but one thing is for sure, the Chiefs are always looking to stay on top and continue their winning ways.
