Black, Blue, Red and Purple: What were the routes that were considered to relieve congestion on the M4

With the upcoming Senedd election in May, the issue of congestion on the M4 has become a major concern for the candidates and the voters. The two frontrunner parties, Welsh Labour and the Welsh Conservatives, have both backed the idea of building a new road to alleviate the traffic on the M4. This has sparked a debate among the voters on which party’s solution is the right one for the future of the M4 and Wales as a whole.

The M4 is a vital artery for Wales, connecting the east and west of the country and serving as a crucial route for business, tourism, and daily commute. However, the increasing volume of traffic has led to frequent delays and long travel times, causing frustration among drivers and affecting the overall economy. Both Welsh Labour and the Welsh Conservatives have acknowledged this issue and have proposed their respective plans to address it.

Welsh Labour has proposed a relief road, known as the M4 Relief Road, which would stretch for 14 miles from Magor to Castleton, bypassing the heavily congested section of the M4 around Newport. The party believes that this new road will not only reduce travel times but also improve air quality and road safety in the area. The estimated cost for this project is around £1.3 billion, and Welsh Labour has promised to contribute £700 million of this cost, with the remaining being funded by the UK government. The party also plans to introduce a toll system to finance the construction and maintenance of the relief road.

On the other hand, the Welsh Conservatives have proposed a different solution, known as the M4 M4, which involves upgrading the existing M4 stretch between Miskin and the junction 32 at Coryton. The party believes that this option is more cost-effective, with an estimated cost of £500 million, and could be completed within a shorter time frame. They argue that this upgrade would have similar benefits as the M4 Relief Road, such as reduced travel time and improved air quality, but without the need for a toll system. Instead, the party plans to fund the project through a mix of public and private investments.

Both parties’ proposals have received support and criticism from various groups and individuals. Supporters of the M4 Relief Road argue that it is a long-term solution that will have a significant impact on the future of the M4 and the entire country. They believe that the toll system is a fair way to fund the project, as it would mainly target the heavy goods vehicles that contribute to the majority of the traffic on the M4. They also argue that the relief road would bring economic benefits to the region by improving connectivity and attracting new businesses.

On the other hand, opponents of the M4 Relief Road claim that it would have a severe impact on the environment, as it would cut through the Gwent Levels, an area that is considered a Site of Special Scientific Interest. They argue that the toll system would also have a negative effect on the local economy, as it would discourage people from using the relief road and diverting to other routes. Instead, they support the Welsh Conservatives’ proposal of upgrading the existing M4, arguing that it would have a minimal impact on the environment and is a more realistic solution.

Despite the differences in their proposals, both Welsh Labour and the Welsh Conservatives are committed to finding a solution to alleviate congestion on the M4. The fact that both parties have acknowledged the issue and are actively working towards addressing it is a positive sign for the future of Wales. It shows that the well-being and development of the country are at the forefront of their agenda, regardless of their political differences.

In the end, it will be up to the voters to decide which party’s approach is the most suitable for the future of the M4. However, it is essential to remember that a decision needs to be made, as the congestion on the M4 is not a problem that will go away on its own. It requires a concrete and sustainable solution, and the fact that both Welsh Labour and the Welsh Conservatives have recognized this and included it in their election manifestos is a step in the right direction. Let us hope that the elected party will follow through on their promises and bring much-needed relief to the M4 and its users.
