The Five Enablers of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

in Politics
Reading Time: 3 mins read

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been ongoing for decades, with countless lives lost and a seemingly endless cycle of violence and suffering. Despite the devastating consequences, every powerful actor involved claims to seek peace. The United States and European Union repeat the two-state mantra, the Arab states invoke Palestinian rights, AIPAC proclaims its defense of Israel’s security, and Israeli opposition parties promise “responsible” leadership and stability. Yet, despite these professed intentions, each of these actors has, in their own way, enabled and entrenched a destructive status quo.

The two-state solution has long been touted as the key to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The idea of two separate states, one for Israelis and one for Palestinians, seems like a logical and fair solution. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story. The continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem has made the creation of a viable Palestinian state nearly impossible. The US and EU, who claim to support the two-state solution, have done little to pressure Israel to halt settlement construction. In fact, the US has consistently vetoed UN resolutions condemning Israeli actions, further entrenching the status quo.

The Arab states, while vocal in their support for Palestinian rights, have also played a role in perpetuating the conflict. Many of these states have refused to recognize Israel’s right to exist, and have used the Palestinian cause as a means to divert attention from their own domestic issues. This has only served to further polarize the situation and hinder any progress towards peace.

AIPAC, the powerful pro-Israel lobby in the US, has also contributed to the entrenchment of the status quo. While claiming to defend Israel’s security, AIPAC has consistently opposed any attempts to hold Israel accountable for its actions. This blind support for Israel’s policies, regardless of their impact on the Palestinian people, only serves to perpetuate the conflict.

Even within Israel, opposition parties that claim to offer a more responsible and stable leadership have failed to take meaningful action towards peace. Instead, they have continued to support policies that maintain the occupation and deny Palestinians their basic rights. This has only served to strengthen the hardline stance of the current government and hinder any progress towards a just and lasting peace.

It is clear that despite the professed intentions of these powerful actors, their actions have only served to maintain the destructive status quo. The question then becomes, why? Why do these actors, who claim to seek peace, continue to enable and entrench a situation that only perpetuates suffering and violence?

The answer lies in the political interests and power dynamics at play. The US and EU are hesitant to pressure Israel due to their strong political and economic ties. The Arab states use the Palestinian cause to maintain their own grip on power. AIPAC’s influence in US politics ensures that any criticism of Israel is met with fierce opposition. And within Israel, the fear-mongering tactics of the current government have made it difficult for opposition parties to take a more progressive stance.

But it is time for these powerful actors to put aside their own interests and truly commit to finding a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This can only be achieved through genuine and meaningful actions, not just empty words and slogans.

The US and EU must use their leverage to pressure Israel to halt settlement construction and work towards a fair and equitable two-state solution. The Arab states must recognize Israel’s right to exist and use their influence to promote dialogue and reconciliation. AIPAC must stop blindly supporting Israel’s actions and instead advocate for policies that promote peace and justice for both Israelis and Palestinians. And within Israel, opposition parties must take a bold and courageous stance towards peace, even if it means going against the current government’s rhetoric.

It is time for all actors involved to step up and take responsibility for their role in perpetuating the conflict. Only then can we truly move towards a future of peace and coexistence for Israelis and Palestinians. The time for empty words and inaction is over. It is time for action and a genuine commitment to peace.
