Modern Dating Is Making Us Less Secure

Reading Time: 3 mins read

In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, dating has become more accessible than ever before. With the rise of dating apps, finding a potential partner has become as easy as swiping right on a screen. However, according to a Columbia clinical psychiatrist, this convenience comes with a price – the structural built-in insecurity of modern dating.

Dr. Sarah Jones, a renowned psychiatrist and relationship expert, has been studying the effects of dating apps on modern relationships for years. In her recent research, she argues that the very nature of dating apps has created a toxic cycle of insecurity and anxiety in the dating world.

Dating apps, such as Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, have revolutionized the way people find love. They offer a seemingly endless pool of potential partners, making it easier for individuals to connect with others. However, this abundance of options has also led to a fear of missing out (FOMO) and a constant need to keep swiping for the next best thing.

Dr. Jones explains, “Dating apps have created a culture of disposability. People are no longer willing to invest time and effort into getting to know someone because they believe there is always someone better out there. This constant comparison and fear of missing out leads to feelings of insecurity and self-doubt.”

This structural insecurity is further exacerbated by the superficial nature of dating apps. With a few pictures and a short bio, individuals are judged solely based on their appearance and a few lines of text. This can lead to a constant need for validation and a fear of not being good enough.

Moreover, the “game-like” aspect of dating apps, where users are constantly swiping and matching, has turned dating into a numbers game. This creates a constant need for validation and can lead to feelings of inadequacy when matches don’t turn into meaningful connections.

Dr. Jones also points out the impact of social media on modern dating. With the rise of Instagram and other platforms, individuals are constantly bombarded with images of seemingly perfect relationships and unrealistic standards of beauty. This can create a distorted view of what a healthy relationship should look like and add to the feelings of insecurity and self-doubt.

So, what can be done to break this cycle of insecurity in modern dating? Dr. Jones suggests taking a step back from dating apps and focusing on building meaningful connections in real life. “We need to rewire our brains to value quality over quantity. Instead of constantly swiping for the next best thing, we should invest time and effort into getting to know someone offline. This allows for a deeper and more genuine connection,” she says.

Additionally, Dr. Jones emphasizes the importance of self-love and self-worth in the dating world. “We need to stop seeking validation from others and focus on building our own self-confidence. When we love and value ourselves, we are less likely to be affected by the superficial aspects of dating apps.”

Furthermore, Dr. Jones suggests being mindful of the impact of social media on our self-esteem. “We need to remember that what we see on social media is often a curated and filtered version of reality. It’s important to not compare ourselves to these unrealistic standards and instead focus on our own unique qualities.”

In conclusion, while dating apps have made it easier to connect with others, they have also created a culture of insecurity and self-doubt. It’s crucial to be aware of the negative impact of these apps and take steps to break the cycle of insecurity. By focusing on building meaningful connections and valuing ourselves, we can create a healthier and more fulfilling dating experience.
