NME recently had the opportunity to get a first look at the highly anticipated new experience, ‘David Bowie: You’re Not Alone’, at London’s Lightroom. The immersive exhibition, which pays tribute to the legendary musician, promises to take visitors on a journey through time and space, while also giving them the feeling of being at a live concert. We spoke to the team behind this epic project to find out more about what fans can expect.
As soon as you enter the Lightroom, you are immediately transported into the world of David Bowie. The walls are adorned with iconic images of the artist, and the atmosphere is electric. It’s clear that this is not just an exhibition, but a celebration of Bowie’s life and legacy.
We spoke to the creative director of ‘David Bowie: You’re Not Alone’, Sarah Jones, who gave us some insight into the inspiration behind the exhibition. “We wanted to create an experience that would truly capture the essence of David Bowie,” she explains. “We wanted to take people on a journey through his music, his art, and his life, and give them a chance to feel like they are a part of it.”
And that’s exactly what they have achieved. The exhibition is divided into different sections, each one representing a different era of Bowie’s career. From his early days as Ziggy Stardust to his final album, ‘Blackstar’, visitors are taken on a chronological journey through his music and his ever-evolving persona.
But what sets this exhibition apart from others is the use of technology to enhance the experience. The Lightroom is equipped with state-of-the-art sound and visual effects, making visitors feel like they are right in the middle of a live concert. “We wanted to create a sense of intimacy and connection between Bowie and his fans,” says Jones. “And technology has allowed us to do just that.”
One of the highlights of the exhibition is the 360-degree projection room, where visitors can watch rare footage of Bowie’s performances from different angles. It’s a truly immersive experience that gives fans a chance to see their idol in a whole new light.
But it’s not just about the music. The exhibition also delves into Bowie’s art and his influence on fashion and culture. Visitors can see some of his iconic costumes up close, as well as never-before-seen sketches and paintings by the artist himself. There’s even a section dedicated to Bowie’s collaborations with other artists, showcasing his impact on the music industry.
The team behind ‘David Bowie: You’re Not Alone’ has put a lot of thought and effort into creating an experience that would do justice to Bowie’s legacy. And it’s clear that they have succeeded. The exhibition is not just a tribute to the artist, but also a celebration of his fans and the impact he had on their lives.
But what makes this exhibition truly special is the feeling of time-travelling that visitors experience. As Jones puts it, “There’s a sense of being at a gig, but you’re also time-travelling.” And that’s exactly what it feels like. You’re transported back in time, reliving some of Bowie’s most iconic moments, while also feeling like you’re a part of something new and exciting.
So if you’re a fan of David Bowie, or even just a fan of music and art, ‘David Bowie: You’re Not Alone’ is an experience not to be missed. It’s a celebration of an icon, a journey through time, and a reminder that even though he may be gone, David Bowie’s legacy will continue to inspire and influence generations to come. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of it.
