From humble beginnings in a remote Kenyan village to becoming one of the most dominant runners in American college history, Edward Cheserek’s journey is nothing short of incredible. With 17 NCAA titles to his name, many have been left in awe of this quiet and relentless athlete. But what is the secret behind his record-breaking success? And what’s next for the man known as “King Cheserek”? Let’s take a closer look at the inspiring story of this remarkable athlete.

Born on February 1, 1994, in the small village of Kapkoi in Kenya, Edward Cheserek grew up in a humble household with his parents and six siblings. His father was a subsistence farmer and his mother sold vegetables at the local market. Growing up, Cheserek was no stranger to hard work and perseverance. He had to walk 7 miles to school every day and help his family with farming after school. But amidst the challenges, he found solace in running.

At the age of 8, Cheserek started running to and from school, a distance of 14 miles round trip. He would also participate in the annual village races and quickly gained a reputation for his speed and endurance. His talent did not go unnoticed, and at the age of 12, he was offered a scholarship to attend the prestigious St. Patrick’s High School in Iten, Kenya. This was the turning point in Cheserek’s life, as he was able to focus on his passion for running and receive proper training.

Under the guidance of his coach, Brother Colm O’Connell, Cheserek honed his skills and became one of the top high school runners in Kenya. He won numerous national titles and set records in the 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m events. But it wasn’t until his senior year that he caught the attention of American college coaches.

In 2010, Cheserek received a scholarship to attend the University of Oregon, one of the top track and field programs in the country. It was a dream come true for the young athlete, who had always dreamt of competing in the United States. However, his transition to college life was not without challenges. Cheserek had to adapt to a new culture, weather, and training methods. But his determination and hard work paid off, and he quickly made a name for himself in the track and field world.

Over the next four years, Cheserek dominated the NCAA track and field scene, winning a record-breaking 17 NCAA titles in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track events. He also set several collegiate records and became the first athlete to win three NCAA cross country titles in a row. His impressive performance earned him the nickname “King Cheserek” and made him a household name in the running community.

Aside from his impressive athletic achievements, Cheserek is also known for his humble and quiet demeanor. He lets his performances on the track speak for themselves and avoids the limelight. His faith and family values have also played a significant role in shaping his character. Cheserek is a devout Catholic and often attends mass before races. He also credits his parents for instilling discipline and hard work in him, which has been crucial to his success.

After four years at the University of Oregon, Cheserek graduated with a degree in economics and turned professional. He signed with Nike and continues to train under the guidance of his coach, Brother Colm. In 2018, he became a United States citizen and now represents the country in international competitions. He has already made his mark, winning the 2019 USATF Cross Country Championships and finishing third in the 10,000m at the 2020 US Olympic Trials.

As for what’s next for “King Cheserek,” he has his sights set on the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and hopes to bring home a medal for his country. He also plans to continue competing in road races and marathons, with the ultimate goal of breaking the world record in the marathon distance.

In conclusion, Edward Cheserek’s journey from a remote Kenyan village to dominating American college running is a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and perseverance. His story is one of inspiration and serves as a reminder that anything is possible with the right mindset and work ethic. As he continues to make his mark in the running world, there is no doubt that “King Cheserek” will continue to inspire and motivate future generations of athletes
