Zohran Mamdani Won’t Defund the Police. The Movement Can Grow With Him Anyway.

Reading Time: 3 mins read

In a time where calls for police reform and defunding have become increasingly prevalent, Zohran Mamdani, a newly elected state assemblyman in Queens, New York, has taken a different stance. Despite being a progressive Democrat and a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform, Mamdani has publicly stated that he does not support cutting police funding. This may come as a surprise to some, but it is actually a strategic move on his part.

Mamdani’s decision to not defund the police is not rooted in a lack of concern for the issues facing marginalized communities, but rather a recognition of the political reality in New York State. As a newcomer to the political arena, Mamdani understands that pushing for such a controversial issue would not be a wise move. It would not only jeopardize his own political career, but also hinder the progress of the movement for police reform.

Both Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo have also acknowledged the delicate nature of the issue. They understand that drastically cutting police funding would not only have negative consequences for public safety, but also pose a threat to their own political standing. As seasoned politicians, they know that the public is not yet ready to fully embrace the idea of defunding the police. Therefore, it would not be a savvy move to push for it at this time.

But does this mean that the movement for police reform should not support Mamdani and his decision? Absolutely not. In fact, this presents a unique opportunity for the movement to grow and make progress in a different way.

Mamdani’s stance on police funding does not mean that he is not committed to the cause. On the contrary, he has a strong track record of advocating for criminal justice reform and has been a vocal supporter of Black Lives Matter protests. He has also proposed alternative solutions to addressing issues within the criminal justice system, such as investing in mental health services and community programs.

By supporting Mamdani and his alternative approach, the movement can actually make significant progress. Instead of focusing solely on defunding the police, which may be a long and difficult battle, the movement can work with Mamdani to implement other reforms that will have a more immediate impact. This includes investing in education, healthcare, and community programs that can help address the root causes of crime and reduce the need for heavy policing.

Moreover, Mamdani’s election victory is a clear indication of the shifting political landscape in New York State. The fact that a progressive candidate like him was able to defeat a long-time incumbent shows that the public is ready for change. This presents an opportunity for the movement to continue to push for reform at all levels of government, including within the police department.

Mamdani’s position on police funding may not align with the demands of the movement, but that does not mean he is not an ally. In fact, his strategic decision may actually help the movement gain more support and make progress in the long run. By working together and supporting Mamdani, the movement can continue to grow and push for meaningful change.

In conclusion, the decision by Zohran Mamdani to not defund the police may seem counterintuitive to some, but it is a strategic move that should be supported by the movement for police reform. It is important to recognize that change takes time and sometimes requires alternative approaches. Mamdani’s election victory and commitment to addressing issues within the criminal justice system make him a valuable ally in the fight for justice and equality. Let us support him and work together to make real and lasting change.
