However, this approach fails to address the root causes of crime and ignores the potential for real change.
The recent case of Iryna Zarutska’s murder has once again brought this issue to the forefront. The Ukrainian immigrant was brutally killed in her own home by an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record. The tragedy has sparked outrage and calls for action from the far right, who are using it to push their agenda of tougher punishments and stricter immigration policies.
The proposed solution by the far right is to revive executions and roll back criminal justice reforms in order to prevent similar crimes from happening. However, this approach is short-sighted and fails to address the underlying issues that contribute to such heinous acts.
First and foremost, the idea that executions and harsher punishments will act as a deterrent for crime has been disproven time and time again. Numerous studies have shown that there is no clear evidence that the death penalty or longer prison sentences have any impact on crime rates. In fact, in countries where capital punishment is still practiced, there is often a higher rate of violent crime.

These groups would bear the brunt of harsher punishments, perpetuating racial and economic inequalities.
Instead of turning back the clock, we should be looking forward and focusing on solutions that address the root causes of crime. This includes investing in education, mental health services, and social programs that can help prevent individuals from turning to crime in the first place. Furthermore, the far right’s fixation on stricter immigration policies as a solution to preventing crimes committed by undocumented immigrants is misguided. Studies have shown that immigrants, both documented and undocumented, have lower crime rates than native-born citizens. Moreover, the vast majority of immigrants come to the United States seeking a better life, not to commit crimes.
In the case of Iryna Zarutska’s murder, the focus should not be on the perpetrator’s immigration status, but on the fact that he was able to obtain a gun despite having a criminal record. This highlights the need for stronger gun control measures, which have been proven to reduce crime rates.
As we mourn the tragic loss of Iryna Zarutska, we must resist the knee-jerk reactions of the far right and instead focus on real solutions that address the root causes of crime. Reviving executions and rolling back criminal justice reforms will not prevent these types of crimes from happening again. It’s time to move towards a more progressive and effective approach to criminal justice that prioritizes prevention and rehabilitation over punishment. Only then can we truly create a safer and more just society for all.
