West Bank: Record Number of Demolitions over Building Permits as Israel Furthers Annexation Agenda

in Politics
Reading Time: 2 mins read

In just nine months, Israel has demolished more Palestinian homes and structures in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, than in the entire previous year. This alarming statistic, reported by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), sheds light on the ongoing human rights violations and displacement faced by Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.

According to OCHA, by 30 September of this year, Israeli authorities had demolished a staggering 1,288 structures over building permits, averaging nearly five demolitions a day. This includes 138 structures that were funded by international aid, highlighting the impact of these demolitions not only on Palestinian families but also on the efforts of the international community to support them.

These demolitions have left thousands of Palestinians homeless, including children, women, and the elderly. They have also resulted in the loss of livelihoods for many families who rely on these structures for their income. The impact of these demolitions goes beyond just physical structures; it is a direct attack on the very fabric of Palestinian society and their right to live in dignity.

The demolition of Palestinian homes and structures is not a new phenomenon. It is a systematic policy of the Israeli government to forcibly displace Palestinians from their land and to control the demographics of the occupied territories. This is in direct violation of international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the destruction of property belonging to civilians in occupied territories.

The justification given by the Israeli government for these demolitions is that these structures were built without proper permits. However, obtaining building permits in the occupied territories is a nearly impossible task for Palestinians. The discriminatory and complex permit system, coupled with the high fees and long waiting periods, make it nearly impossible for Palestinians to obtain the necessary permits. As a result, many are forced to build without permits, risking demolition and displacement.

The demolition of Palestinian homes and structures not only violates international law but also goes against basic human decency. It is a cruel and inhumane act that has severe consequences for the affected families. It is also a clear violation of the right to adequate housing, which is a fundamental human right.

Furthermore, these demolitions are part of a larger plan to annex and expand illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. The continued expansion of settlements is a major obstacle to the establishment of a viable Palestinian state and a just and lasting peace in the region. It also undermines the prospects for a two-state solution, which is widely recognized as the only viable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The international community has a responsibility to hold Israel accountable for its actions and to put an end to these illegal and inhumane demolitions. The ongoing support and funding of these demolitions by the Israeli government must also be addressed and condemned. It is time for the international community to take concrete actions to ensure that Israel abides by international law and respects the rights of Palestinians.

In conclusion, the demolition of Palestinian homes and structures by Israel is a grave violation of human rights and international law. It is a deliberate and systematic policy aimed at forcibly displacing Palestinians from their land and controlling the demographics of the occupied territories. The international community must take a stand against these demolitions and work towards a just and lasting solution for the Palestinian people. It is time for Israel to be held accountable for its actions and for the rights of Palestinians to be respected and protected.
