‘This Is Not a Third-World Country’: Oregon AG Slams Trump’s Effort to Send Troops Into Portland

“It’s foundational in our democracy that using the United States military in our cities is not normal,” state AG Dan Rayfield tells TIME.

In a recent interview with TIME, Oregon’s Attorney General Dan Rayfield spoke out against the use of the United States military in our cities, stating that it goes against the very foundation of our democracy. As protests continue to sweep the nation, Rayfield’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding our democratic values and protecting the rights of our citizens.

Rayfield, who has been a vocal advocate for civil rights and social justice, expressed his concern over the deployment of federal troops in cities like Portland, where protests against police brutality and systemic racism have been ongoing for over 50 days. He emphasized that the use of military force against peaceful protesters is not only unnecessary but also a violation of our constitutional rights.

“It’s alarming to see the federal government using military tactics against its own citizens,” Rayfield stated. “This is not normal, and it should not be accepted as such in a democracy.”

The deployment of federal troops in Portland has sparked outrage and condemnation from local officials, including Rayfield, who have called for their immediate withdrawal. The use of tear gas, rubber bullets, and other aggressive tactics against protesters has only escalated tensions and further eroded the trust between law enforcement and the community.

Rayfield also highlighted the fact that the presence of federal troops in our cities goes against the principle of local control, where decisions about law enforcement and public safety are made by local officials who are accountable to their communities. The sudden and uninvited arrival of federal troops not only undermines this principle but also creates confusion and chaos in the affected cities.

Furthermore, Rayfield pointed out that the use of military force against protesters is a clear violation of their First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and assembly. Peaceful protests are a fundamental part of our democracy, and the government’s attempt to suppress them with force is a dangerous precedent that must be challenged.

As the nation grapples with issues of racial injustice and police brutality, Rayfield stressed the importance of addressing these issues through meaningful and constructive dialogue, rather than resorting to violence and intimidation. He urged for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing protests, with a focus on addressing the root causes of the unrest and implementing real and lasting change.

In conclusion, Rayfield’s words serve as a powerful reminder that the use of military force in our cities is not normal and should not be accepted as such. As citizens of a democracy, it is our responsibility to uphold our values and protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their race, gender, or beliefs. Let us heed Rayfield’s call and work towards a more just and equitable society for all.
