The Stranger Things Creators on Why They Killed Off Four Beloved Characters

Reading Time: 3 mins read

As fans of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things eagerly waited for the highly anticipated third season, they couldn’t help but mourn the loss of some of their beloved characters. The Duffer Brothers, the creators and showrunners of Stranger Things, have never shied away from killing off fan-favorite characters, and season three was no exception. Barb, Bob, Billy, and Eddie all met their demise in shocking and heartbreaking ways, leaving fans wondering why these characters had to go. In a recent interview, the Duffer Brothers finally explained their reasoning behind these deaths.

First up, let’s talk about Barb. Ever since her untimely death in the first season, fans have been clamoring for justice for the lovable and nerdy best friend of Nancy Wheeler. The Duffer Brothers revealed that Barb’s death was necessary to set the tone for the series. They wanted to establish early on that no one was safe in the world of Stranger Things, creating a sense of danger and unpredictability. Additionally, Barb’s death served as a catalyst for Nancy’s character development, as she became more determined to find the truth behind her friend’s disappearance.

Moving on to Bob, the lovable and dorky boyfriend of Joyce Byers. His death in season two left fans devastated, with many believing that he deserved a happier ending. However, the Duffer Brothers explained that Bob’s death was crucial in showing the real dangers of the Upside Down. It was not just a spooky alternate dimension, but a place where people could die, even the most innocent and kind-hearted characters like Bob. His death also added an emotional layer to Joyce’s character, as she had to cope with the loss of yet another loved one.

Then there’s Billy, the arrogant and antagonistic stepbrother of Max. Many were surprised by his abrupt death in season three, as he seemed to be redeeming himself before sacrificing his life to save Eleven. The Duffer Brothers shared that they always had a plan for Billy’s character arc, and his redemption and sacrifice were a part of it. They wanted to show that even someone as cruel and unlikable as Billy could have a moment of redemption and redemption, and ultimately become a hero.

Finally, there’s Eddie, the lovable radio host who befriended Dustin in season two. His death in season three was a shock to many, and the Duffer Brothers admitted that it was the hardest death for them to write. However, they felt that Eddie’s character had served his purpose, and his death served as a reminder of the brutal reality of the Mind Flayer’s control over the residents of Hawkins. It also added an emotional weight to Dustin’s journey, as he had to grapple with the loss of his friend while fighting against the Mind Flayer.

The Duffer Brothers also stressed that these deaths were not just for shock value or to elicit an emotional response from the audience. Each death was carefully thought out and served a purpose in the overall story of Stranger Things. They wanted to keep the audience on the edge of their seats and create a sense of uncertainty, as no character was safe from the dangers of the Upside Down.

Moreover, the deaths of these characters allowed for the development and growth of other characters. Nancy and Joyce’s characters were shaped by the loss of their loved ones, and Billy’s death brought Max and Eleven closer together as sisters. It also added depth to Eleven’s powers, as she was able to tap into Billy’s memories and see the good in him, despite his past actions.

In conclusion, the Duffer Brothers have a clear and well-thought-out plan for each character’s journey in Stranger Things. While it may be tough for fans to say goodbye to their favorite characters, these deaths serve a purpose in the larger story and add emotional depth to the show. As the audience eagerly awaits the fourth season, we can trust that the Duffer Brothers will continue to surprise and shock us with their storytelling, even if it means saying goodbye to some beloved characters along the way.
