They Have Known Nothing but War—The Plight of Syria’s Out-of-School Children

The Syrian war has been raging on for almost a decade, leaving behind a trail of destruction and devastating consequences. While the casualties, loss of homes, and displacement of millions of people have been widely documented, one aspect that often gets overlooked is the impact on children’s education. Thousands of Syrian children have been deprived of their fundamental right to education, especially those living in makeshift camps as displaced refugees. Amidst the already difficult living conditions and economic hardships, the inability of families to afford educational costs further adds to the precarious situation, jeopardizing the future of these innocent children.

One such child is 13-year-old Adel Al-Abbas from Aleppo, a city in northern Syria that has been engulfed in the chaos of war. Like many children of his age, Adel should have been attending school, learning new things, and building a promising future. However, the war has forced him to quit his studies and take on responsibilities far beyond his years.

When the war broke out in Syria, Adel’s family was forced to flee their home in search of safety and shelter. They now live in a makeshift camp, where basic necessities like food, water, and shelter are a constant struggle. With no access to a proper education facility, Adel and many children like him have been left with no choice but to abandon their studies.

The situation is even more challenging for families who have lost a parent or a breadwinner in the war. The need to prioritize survival makes it almost impossible for these families to think about education and the associated costs. As a result, many children like Adel are left to fend for themselves, taking on odd jobs and missing out on the essential years of schooling.

But the deprivation of education is not just limited to the lack of infrastructure or financial constraints. The psychological toll of living in a war-torn country also plays a significant role. Many children in Syria have been exposed to violence, displacement, and loss, leaving them with deep emotional scars. These traumas often manifest in the form of behavioral issues, making it difficult for them to focus on education. As a result, many children drop out of school due to the overwhelming impact of the war on their mental health.

The consequences of this education crisis in Syria are worrisome, not just for the individual children but also for the future of the country. Education is crucial in shaping the future of a nation and laying the foundations for a peaceful and prosperous society. However, with thousands of children being denied education, the future of Syria is at risk.

Fortunately, there are organizations and individuals who have recognized this pressing issue and are working towards providing education to these vulnerable children. Various NGOs have set up makeshift schools in the refugee camps, offering basic education and hope to the children who have been affected by the war. These schools provide a safe space for children to learn and heal from the traumas of war. Moreover, initiatives like distance learning and online classes have also been implemented to reach children in remote areas without access to a physical school.

Despite these efforts, there is still a long way to go in ensuring that every Syrian child has access to education. More resources and support are needed to sustain these initiatives and make education a priority for the children of Syria. Governments and international organizations must also step up their efforts in providing financial aid and resources to rebuild the education system in the country.

As for young Adel, his dream of going back to school and becoming a doctor still burns bright. Despite the challenges he has faced, he holds on to hope and continues to dream of a better future. He is determined to not let the war destroy his dreams and is grateful for the opportunities he has to learn, even if it’s in a makeshift classroom.

In conclusion, it is a tragedy that the war in Syria has robbed thousands of children of their right to education. The future of these children and the country as a whole is at stake. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that their right to education is restored, and they are given the chance to build a brighter future for themselves and their nation. As the world looks towards a resolution for the conflict in Syria, let us not forget about the thousands of children like Adel whose education and future hang in the balance.
