Chicago Teachers: Fighting for Our Students Amidst Government Neglect and Militarization

As educators, we are dedicated to providing our students with the best education possible. We strive to create a safe and nurturing environment where our students can learn and grow. However, in recent years, our efforts have been hindered by the lack of funding for our schools and the increasing militarization of our cities.

The recent incident at a Chicago elementary school, where ICE released tear gas outside the school, is just one example of the challenges we face as teachers. Our students were traumatized by the presence of tear gas and the chaos that ensued. We had to scramble to ensure the safety of our students and calm their fears. This is not an isolated incident – our students are constantly exposed to violence and trauma in their communities, and it is our job to support them through these difficult experiences.

But while we are dealing with traumatized students and trying to provide them with the support they need, the Trump administration is spending millions of dollars to militarize our cities. This is a clear indication of where the government’s priorities lie – not with the well-being of our students, but with the use of force and intimidation.

The fact that our schools are severely underfunded only exacerbates the situation. Our students are already facing numerous challenges in their personal lives, and the lack of resources in our schools only adds to their struggles. We have overcrowded classrooms, outdated textbooks, and limited access to technology. How are we supposed to provide our students with a quality education when we don’t have the basic resources to do so?

It’s time for the government to step up and prioritize the well-being of our students. Instead of pouring money into militarization, they should be investing in our schools and our communities. This means increasing funding for our schools, hiring more counselors and support staff, and providing our students with the resources they need to succeed.

We also need to address the root causes of violence and trauma in our communities. This includes addressing systemic issues such as poverty, racism, and lack of access to mental health services. We cannot continue to ignore these issues and expect our students to thrive.

As teachers, we are on the front lines of these issues every day. We see the impact they have on our students and we are committed to doing everything in our power to support them. But we cannot do it alone. We need the support of our government to ensure that our students have the best possible chance at a successful future.

That’s why we are calling on the Trump administration to stop the militarization of our cities and start investing in our schools. Our students deserve better – they deserve a safe and nurturing environment where they can learn and grow without fear. It’s time for our government to prioritize the well-being of our students and give them the resources they need to succeed.

In the face of these challenges, we will continue to fight for our students and advocate for their needs. We will not let the government’s neglect and militarization stop us from providing our students with the education they deserve. We will stand strong and united, because our students are worth it.
