We Did Not Start This Fire, But We Are Being Handed the Bill: It’s Time to Pay It

Climate change is a global crisis that has been looming over us for decades. The effects of this crisis are being felt by everyone, but it is the least developed countries that are bearing the brunt of it. These countries, often referred to as the “Global South”, have contributed the least to the problem, yet they are the ones who are suffering the most. As Evans Njewa, Chair of the Least Developed Countries Group on Climate Change, rightly said, “We did not start this fire, but we are being handed the bill. The wealthy country’s bill. It’s time to pay it.”

The recent USD 1.3 trillion roadmap announced by developed countries to tackle climate change is a step in the right direction. However, it is only a starting point. The real tests of success lie in the delivery and accountability of these promises. The least developed countries have been waiting for too long for the developed countries to take responsibility for their actions. It’s time for them to step up and fulfill their obligations.

The least developed countries are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. They are already facing extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and food and water shortages. These countries do not have the resources or infrastructure to adapt to these changes. They are also the ones who are least equipped to deal with the aftermath of natural disasters. The developed countries, on the other hand, have the resources and technology to mitigate the effects of climate change. It is their responsibility to support the least developed countries in their efforts to adapt and build resilience.

The Paris Agreement, signed in 2015, was a historic moment in the fight against climate change. It was a commitment by all countries to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius. However, the developed countries have failed to fulfill their pledge of providing USD 100 billion annually to support climate action in developing countries. This lack of financial support has hindered the efforts of the least developed countries to tackle climate change. It’s time for the developed countries to honor their commitment and provide the necessary funds to the least developed countries.

Moreover, the developed countries also need to take responsibility for their carbon emissions. These countries have been the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, which are the main cause of climate change. It’s time for them to reduce their emissions and shift to cleaner and renewable sources of energy. The least developed countries should not have to bear the burden of the developed countries’ actions. It’s time for the developed countries to pay their dues and help the least developed countries in their fight against climate change.

The USD 1.3 trillion roadmap announced by developed countries is a positive step towards addressing climate change. However, it is crucial that this money is used effectively and reaches the most vulnerable communities in the least developed countries. The delivery and accountability of these funds are essential for the success of this roadmap. The developed countries must ensure that the funds are used for climate adaptation and mitigation projects and not for their own interests.

The least developed countries are not asking for a handout, but for a fair and just solution to the climate crisis. They are not responsible for the problem, but they are the ones who are paying the price. It’s time for the developed countries to take responsibility for their actions and support the least developed countries in their efforts to combat climate change. This is not just a moral obligation, but also a legal one under the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities”. The developed countries must fulfill their obligations and work together with the least developed countries to find sustainable solutions to the climate crisis.

In conclusion, the least developed countries have been handed the bill for a fire they did not start. It’s time for the developed countries to pay it. The USD 1.3 trillion roadmap is a positive step, but it’s just the beginning. The real challenge lies in the delivery and accountability of these promises. The developed countries must fulfill their commitments and support the least developed countries in their fight against climate change. It’s time for us to come together and work towards a sustainable future for all.
