The UN’s ‘International Days’ Range from the Sublime to the Ridiculous

Reading Time: 3 mins read

The United Nations, an international organization dedicated to promoting peace, cooperation, and human rights, is known for its important work in addressing global issues. However, amidst its serious and significant efforts, the UN also has a lighter side. The 193-member General Assembly, the UN’s highest policy-making body, routinely designates “International Days” and “World Days” on a wide range of subjects and events. These commemorations range from the sublime to the ridiculous, leading some to question the purpose and impact of these days.

On one hand, the UN’s International Days serve as a reminder of the organization’s commitment to promoting awareness and action on important issues. For example, International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8th, highlights the achievements of women and calls for gender equality. This day has been instrumental in bringing attention to the ongoing struggle for women’s rights and has led to significant progress in this area.

Similarly, the International Day of Peace, observed on September 21st, aims to strengthen the ideals of peace and non-violence. This day serves as a reminder of the UN’s core mission and encourages individuals and nations to work towards a more peaceful world. The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed on March 21st, also plays a crucial role in promoting tolerance and understanding among different cultures and races.

These International Days also provide an opportunity for the UN to collaborate with its member states and other organizations to raise awareness and take action on pressing global issues. For instance, World Water Day, observed on March 22nd, focuses on the importance of freshwater and the need for sustainable management of this vital resource. This day has led to significant progress in addressing water scarcity and promoting access to clean water for all.

However, amidst these important and meaningful commemorations, the UN also designates days that seem trivial and unimportant. For instance, World Toilet Day, observed on November 19th, aims to raise awareness about the global sanitation crisis. While the issue of sanitation is undoubtedly important, the choice of a “World Toilet Day” has been met with criticism and ridicule, with some questioning the UN’s priorities.

Similarly, the International Day of Happiness, observed on March 20th, has been described as a “silly” and “unimportant” day by some. While the pursuit of happiness is undoubtedly a universal goal, the designation of a specific day for it seems frivolous and unnecessary. This has led to some questioning the credibility and effectiveness of the UN’s International Days.

Moreover, the sheer number of International Days designated by the UN has also been a cause for concern. With over 140 International Days and 60 World Days, some argue that the significance and impact of these days are diluted. It has been suggested that the UN should focus on a smaller number of days that have a more significant impact and relevance to global issues.

Despite these criticisms, the UN’s International Days continue to serve a purpose in promoting awareness and action on important issues. These days provide a platform for the UN to engage with its member states and the public, and to highlight the pressing global issues that require attention. They also serve as a reminder of the UN’s commitment to its core mission of promoting peace, cooperation, and human rights.

In conclusion, while some may view the UN’s International Days as a “sudden shift from something grand and awe-inspiring to something silly and unimportant,” it is essential to recognize the significance and impact of these days. They serve as a reminder of the UN’s important work and provide a platform for collaboration and action on global issues. However, it is also crucial for the UN to carefully consider the relevance and impact of each designated day to ensure that its efforts are not diluted. Let us continue to celebrate and support the UN’s International Days, while also encouraging the organization to focus on the most pressing global issues of our time.
