I’m in my 70s and train 10 times a week, these are my top tips for staying healthy

As we enter a new year, many of us are making resolutions to improve our health and fitness. Whether it’s losing weight, building muscle, or simply being more active, the desire to be healthier is a common goal for people of all ages. However, sticking to these resolutions can be challenging, and it’s important to have a plan in place to ensure success. That’s why I, Kevin Fulthorpe, have some words of advice for people of all ages on how to get fit, keep fit, and stay fit.

First and foremost, it’s important to set realistic and achievable goals. While it’s great to have big aspirations, it’s also important to break them down into smaller, more manageable goals. This will not only make them more attainable, but it will also give you a sense of accomplishment as you reach each milestone. For example, instead of saying “I want to lose 50 pounds this year,” try setting a goal of losing 5 pounds each month. This way, you can track your progress and adjust your plan accordingly.

Next, find an activity or exercise that you enjoy. Many people make the mistake of forcing themselves to do workouts or activities that they don’t enjoy, which can lead to burnout and ultimately giving up on their fitness goals. Instead, try different activities until you find one that you genuinely enjoy. This could be anything from running, swimming, dancing, or even hiking. When you enjoy what you’re doing, it won’t feel like a chore, and you’ll be more likely to stick with it.

In addition to finding an activity you enjoy, it’s also important to mix things up and keep your workouts interesting. Doing the same routine day after day can become monotonous and can lead to a lack of motivation. Try incorporating different types of exercises, such as strength training, cardio, and flexibility, into your routine. You can also switch up the location of your workouts, whether it’s at the gym, in a park, or even at home. This will not only keep things interesting, but it will also challenge your body in new ways.

Another crucial aspect of getting fit and staying fit is proper nutrition. It’s important to fuel your body with the right foods to support your fitness goals. This means incorporating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. It’s also important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Remember, food is fuel, and the better you fuel your body, the better it will perform during your workouts.

Consistency is key when it comes to fitness. It’s important to make exercise and healthy eating a part of your daily routine. This doesn’t mean you have to spend hours at the gym every day, but rather finding ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily life. This could be taking the stairs instead of the elevator, going for a walk during your lunch break, or even doing a quick at-home workout before bed. Small changes can add up and make a big difference in your overall fitness.

It’s also important to listen to your body and give it the rest and recovery it needs. Pushing yourself too hard can lead to injuries and burnout. Make sure to schedule rest days into your routine and listen to your body when it needs a break. This will not only prevent injuries but also allow your body to recover and come back stronger for your next workout.

Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Fitness is a journey, and there will be ups and downs along the way. It’s important to celebrate your successes and not get discouraged by setbacks. Remember that progress takes time and consistency, and every small step towards your goals is an achievement.

In conclusion, getting fit, keeping fit, and staying fit is a journey that requires dedication, consistency, and a positive mindset. By setting realistic goals, finding activities you enjoy, mixing up your workouts, fueling your body with proper nutrition, and listening to your body, you can achieve your fitness goals and maintain a healthy lifestyle. So, as we enter this new year, let’s make a commitment to our health and well-being and strive to be the best versions of ourselves. Here’s to a happy and healthy year ahead!
