Maternal Deaths Spike in War-Torn Ukraine

Reading Time: 2 mins read

Amidst the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, doctors and medical professionals continue to work tirelessly to save lives and provide essential healthcare services. One such doctor is Dr. Oleksandr Zhelezniakov, director of the Obstetrics Department at Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital.

In a recent interview, Dr. Zhelezniakov shared a harrowing experience that took place during an emergency caesarean section. “It was an emergency caesarean section when the life of the pregnant woman was at risk. We did the operation with just flashlights and no water, and against a backdrop of constant explosions,” he recalled.

In times of war, even the most routine medical procedures become a challenge. The lack of basic necessities such as electricity and water creates a challenging environment for doctors and patients alike. However, for Dr. Zhelezniakov and his team, the safety and well-being of their patients remain their top priority, despite the difficult circumstances.

The hospital, located in eastern Ukraine, has been heavily affected by the ongoing conflict. With constant explosions in the background, the team of medical professionals continues to work tirelessly, providing essential healthcare services to those in need. “We have seen an increase in the number of emergency cases, especially among pregnant women. They are the most vulnerable in times of crisis,” Dr. Zhelezniakov explained.

Despite the ongoing challenges, the hospital has not stopped its operations. The medical team works around the clock, often facing difficult situations with limited resources. “We had to improvise and adapt to the situation. We had to use flashlights during surgeries and find alternative sources of water to ensure the safety of our patients,” Dr. Zhelezniakov added.

The dedication and resilience of the medical team at Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital have not gone unnoticed. Their efforts have been praised by the local community and have gained recognition from international organizations such as the World Health Organization. “Our team is motivated by the knowledge that we are making a difference in the lives of our patients, despite the challenges we face. That is what keeps us going,” Dr. Zhelezniakov said with a smile.

The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine has had a devastating impact on the lives of its citizens. However, amidst the chaos, stories of hope and determination like that of Dr. Zhelezniakov and his team continue to inspire and motivate others. They are a shining example of the unwavering human spirit and the power of healthcare professionals in times of crisis.

In conclusion, the dedication and selflessness of medical professionals like Dr. Zhelezniakov and his team at Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital are a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Despite the challenging circumstances, they continue to provide essential healthcare services to those in need, saving lives and bringing hope to the community. Their story serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, kindness and compassion prevail.
