The world of boxing is mourning the loss of a true legend. Ruben Castillo, the former world title contender, passed away at the age of 68 after a long battle with cancer. The Lubbock, Texas-born fighter will always be remembered for his relentless determination and his willingness to face some of the greatest names in the sport.

Castillo’s career spanned over two decades, starting in the early 1970s. He quickly made a name for himself in the boxing world, earning a reputation as a skilled and fearless fighter. His journey to the top was not an easy one, but Castillo never gave up on his dream of becoming a world champion.

One of the defining moments of Castillo’s career came in 1977 when he faced the legendary Roberto Duran. The two fighters went toe-to-toe for 10 rounds, with Castillo giving Duran a tough fight. Castillo’s determination and bravery were put to the test once again when he faced another boxing legend, Alexis Arguello, in 1980. In 1982, Castillo faced yet another Hall of Fame boxer, Wilfredo Gomez, for the WBC super bantamweight title. Once again, Castillo gave it his all, but was unable to secure the victory. However, his determination and courage in the ring earned him the respect and admiration of boxing fans worldwide.

Castillo’s final attempt at a world title came in 1984 when he faced the legendary Azumah Nelson. Though he was unable to secure the victory, Castillo’s performance once again showed his unwavering dedication to the sport and his never-give-up attitude.

Outside of the ring, Castillo was known for his warm personality and his willingness to help others. He was a beloved member of the boxing community and was respected by all who knew him. His passing has left a void in the hearts of many, and tributes have been pouring in from all corners of the world.

The WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, who had known Castillo for years, expressed his sadness over the loss of a dear friend. He said, “Ruben was a true warrior inside and outside of the ring. He will be deeply missed by the boxing community. Rest in peace, my dear champ.”
