Iran Delays Naming New Supreme Leader Amid Israeli Threat and Trump Insistence on Influence

Reading Time: 3 mins read

Israel has recently made headlines with its threat to target whoever is chosen to lead the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). This comes as no surprise to many, as the country has a long history of criticizing the council for its biased treatment of Israel. However, what has raised eyebrows is the involvement of US President Donald Trump in this issue.

In a recent interview, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel will not tolerate any biased decisions made by the UNHRC and will take action against those responsible. This statement comes as the council is set to choose a new leader, with contenders from Germany, Britain, and Costa Rica. Israel’s threat has been seen as a warning to these countries, as they have previously expressed their views against Israel’s policies.

However, the situation took a different turn when President Trump got involved. In a tweet, he stated that he has the right to influence the choice of the new UNHRC leader. This has caused concern among many countries, as the UNHRC is meant to be an independent body, free from any political influence. Trump’s statement has been seen as a violation of this principle and has raised questions about the US’s commitment to upholding human rights.

But why is Israel so concerned about the UNHRC’s leadership? The answer lies in the council’s treatment of Israel. Since its establishment in 2006, the UNHRC has passed more resolutions against Israel than any other country. In fact, out of the 30 resolutions passed in its first 10 years, 26 were against Israel. This has been seen as a clear bias against the country and has raised doubts about the council’s credibility.

Israel has repeatedly criticized the council for its disproportionate focus on the country while ignoring human rights violations in other parts of the world. This has led to the country’s withdrawal from the council in 2018, with US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley calling it a “cesspool of political bias.” The country has also accused the council of being manipulated by countries with poor human rights records who use it to deflect attention from their own violations.

However, the UNHRC has defended its actions, stating that it is only fulfilling its mandate to promote and protect human rights. They have also pointed out that they have passed resolutions against other countries as well, including Syria, North Korea, and Myanmar. But the fact remains that Israel has been singled out and scrutinized more than any other country, leading to its frustration and anger towards the council.

The involvement of President Trump has added a new dimension to this issue. His statement has been seen as a clear attempt to interfere in the council’s operations and influence its decisions. This has raised concerns about the US’s role in the council and whether it will use its power to further its own interests.

However, it is important to note that the UNHRC’s primary purpose is to promote and protect human rights. It is not a platform for political agendas or power plays. The council must remain independent and free from any external influence to fulfill its responsibilities effectively. Any interference, whether from Israel or the US, undermines the council’s credibility and hinders its ability to address human rights issues around the world.

It is crucial for the new UNHRC leader to be chosen based on their qualifications and commitment to upholding human rights, not on political agendas. The leader must be impartial, fair, and dedicated to promoting human rights for all, regardless of their country of origin.

In conclusion, the threat made by Israel to target whoever is chosen to lead the UNHRC is a clear indication of the country’s frustration with the council’s biased treatment. However, the involvement of President Trump in this issue raises concerns about the council’s independence and its ability to fulfill its mandate. It is essential for the council to remain neutral and for the new leader to be chosen based on their qualifications and dedication to human rights. The UNHRC must continue to work towards promoting and protecting human rights for all, without any external influence.
