When do the clocks change in the UK this year?

Reading Time: 3 mins read

As the season of spring approaches, we are reminded of the beauty and joy that comes with it. And as we bid farewell to the cold, dark winter days, we look forward to brighter days and warmer weather. But there is one special event in the month of March that marks the beginning of a new season- the changing of the clocks. Yes, it’s that time of the year when we get to spring forward and welcome longer days and more sunshine.

On the 14th of March, at 2 am, the clocks will jump forward by an hour, marking the official start of Daylight Saving Time (DST) in many parts of the world. This annual ritual of adjusting our clocks by one hour serves as a reminder that the days are getting longer and brighter, and summer is just around the corner.

For those unfamiliar with DST, it is a practice of advancing the clock by one hour during the warmer months of the year, typically from March to October. This allows for more daylight in the evenings, giving us an extra hour of sunlight to enjoy outdoor activities and to make the most out of our day. The idea of DST was first introduced by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, but it was not until World War I that many countries began to adopt it to conserve energy. And to this day, it continues to be a highly debated topic, with some arguing that it disrupts our natural rhythm and can cause sleep disturbances.

However, there is no denying the fact that springing forward brings with it a plethora of benefits. One of the most significant advantages of changing the clocks is the amount of sunlight it provides us. Longer days mean more time to soak up the sun and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether it’s a picnic in the park, a leisurely stroll, or a game of frisbee, there are countless ways to make the most of that extra hour of daylight. Not to mention, it also gives us an opportunity to save on electricity bills as we rely less on artificial light during the extended evenings.

Another significant impact of DST is on our mental well-being. The winter months can often leave us feeling gloomy and lethargic, but the onset of longer days can have a positive effect on our mood. Sunshine has been scientifically proven to boost the production of serotonin, the hormones responsible for feelings of happiness and well-being. With longer days and more sun, we may notice a significant improvement in our overall mood and energy levels.

Moreover, the springing forward of clocks also has a positive impact on businesses and the economy. Longer days mean more time for people to engage in recreational activities, dine out, and socialize. This, in turn, can boost the economy by increasing sales and creating more job opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry.

As we prepare to set our clocks forward, it’s also a reminder for us to change the batteries in our smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. These devices are crucial for our safety and should be replaced twice a year to ensure they are functioning correctly.

But as we eagerly anticipate the longer days and warmer weather, it is essential to keep in mind that DST also affects our sleep schedule. Those who struggle with sleep may find it challenging to adjust to the time change initially. To minimize the impact, experts suggest gradually adjusting your sleeping pattern a few days before the clocks change. This means going to bed and waking up earlier each day. In addition, avoid caffeine and heavy meals before bedtime, and make sure your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet.

In conclusion, the clocks will spring forward this month, bringing with it longer days, more sunshine, and a renewed sense of energy and optimism. It is an exciting time of the year when nature starts to awaken from its winter slumber, and we get to witness the beauty of spring unfold before our eyes. So let’s embrace the change, adjust our clocks, and look forward to the brighter days ahead. And who knows, maybe this extra hour of daylight will inspire us to try something new or pursue a long-awaited goal. Happy Spring Forward, everyone!
