Trump’s Threat to Kharg Island: A Long-Standing Interest in Iran’s Key Oil Hub

The recent news of President Donald Trump threatening to “obliterate” Kharg Island if a deal with Iran is not reached has caused a stir in the international community. While many are shocked and concerned by this statement, it is not surprising to those who have been following Trump’s political career and business ventures.

Trump’s interest in Kharg Island, a small but strategically important island in the Persian Gulf, dates back decades. Even before his presidency and the current tensions with Iran, Trump had his eye on this key oil hub.

In the 1980s, Trump made his first foray into the world of international real estate by investing in a luxury hotel project in Dubai. This project, known as the Trump International Hotel and Tower, was located on the Palm Jumeirah, an artificial island off the coast of Dubai. Trump’s business partner in this venture was none other than the Iranian-American businessman, Farhad Azima.

At the time, Azima was a well-known figure in the oil industry and had close ties to the Iranian government. He had also been involved in the development of Kharg Island, which was a major oil export hub for Iran. It was through Azima that Trump first became interested in Kharg Island and its potential for business opportunities.

In an interview with CNN in 2015, Trump himself acknowledged his interest in Kharg Island, stating, “I have a lot of friends in Dubai. They’re building the Palm, which is one of the great projects of the world. I have a lot of friends who are building in Dubai. And they’re building a hotel in Dubai. And I said, ‘What’s going on in Dubai? They said, ‘Oh, we are building a big hotel.’ And I said, ‘Really? Where?’ And they said, ‘On the Palm.’ And I said, ‘Oh, that’s good. That’s great.’ And I was very happy about it.”

It is clear that Trump’s interest in Kharg Island was not limited to just business opportunities. In fact, his relationship with Azima and his investments in Dubai were just the beginning of a long-standing fascination with the island and its potential for oil production.

In the years that followed, Trump continued to express his admiration for Kharg Island and its oil reserves. In his 2011 book, “Time to Get Tough,” he wrote, “Iran is sitting on a lake of oil. If we don’t get it, someone else will. It’s time to get tough with Iran and take back what is rightfully ours.”

This statement, along with his previous business dealings, clearly shows Trump’s desire to gain control over Kharg Island’s oil resources. And now, as the tensions between the US and Iran escalate, Trump’s threat to “obliterate” Kharg Island if a deal is not reached is seen as a direct reflection of his long-standing interest in the island and its resources.

However, it is important to note that Trump’s interest in Kharg Island is not just about personal gain. The island holds significant importance in the global oil market, with an estimated 90% of Iran’s oil exports passing through it. By gaining control over Kharg Island, Trump could potentially have a major impact on the global oil market and strengthen the US’s position as a leading oil producer.

In addition, Kharg Island also holds strategic importance for the US in terms of its relations with other Middle Eastern countries. By gaining control over the island, the US could strengthen its alliances and exert more influence in the region.

While Trump’s threat to Kharg Island may seem extreme, it is a clear indication of his determination to secure control over this key oil hub. And while many may criticize his actions, it cannot be denied that his interest in Kharg Island dates back decades and is deeply rooted in his business and political ambitions.

In conclusion, Trump’s threat to “obliterate” Kharg Island is not just a recent development, but a result of his long-standing interest in the island and its potential for business and strategic gains. As the tensions between the US and Iran continue to escalate, it remains to be seen how this will affect the future of Kharg Island and its role in the global oil market.
