Troy Aikman Recalls Nearly Quitting Football in High School, Blasts Coaches for Pressuring Kids

Growing up in Henryetta, Oklahoma, Troy Aikman was known as the ultimate high school athlete. From an early age, it was clear that he had a special talent for sports, and he quickly became a triple threat in football, baseball, and basketball. It was no surprise that he later went on to become one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history, leading the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories.

But before Aikman achieved success on the professional level, he faced a pivotal moment in his high school career that almost led him to quit football altogether. In a recent interview, the former Cowboys star opened up about the pressure he faced from coaches and the toll it took on his love for the game.

Aikman revealed that during his junior year, he seriously considered giving up football and focusing solely on baseball. He had always excelled at both sports, and baseball seemed like the safer and more lucrative option. However, after much contemplation and discussions with his family, Aikman decided to stick with football and see where it would take him.

Looking back on that decision, Aikman admits that he was heavily influenced by the pressure put on him by his coaches. He recalls feeling overwhelmed and burnt out from constantly being pushed to be the best and to win at all costs. This pressure not only affected his performance on the field but also his mental and emotional well-being.

In the 90s and early 2000s, being a multi-sport athlete was not uncommon. Many successful athletes, like Aikman, played multiple sports during their high school days. However, with the increasing competitiveness in sports and the emphasis on specialization, the trend of multi-sport athletes is slowly fading away.

Today, young athletes are encouraged to focus on one sport and to start training and competing at a younger age. While this may seem like the best path to success, it can also lead to burnout and injuries. Moreover, it takes away from the overall development and enjoyment of the athlete.

Aikman’s story serves as a reminder that sports should be about passion, not pressure. It’s essential to have a balance in life and to not let the pursuit of success overshadow the love for the game. Coaches should focus on nurturing their players’ talents and encouraging them to explore other sports, rather than putting all their eggs in one basket.

Fortunately, Aikman’s decision to continue playing football paid off in the long run. He went on to play for the University of Oklahoma before transferring to UCLA, where he led his team to two bowl victories. In 1989, he was drafted first overall by the Dallas Cowboys, and the rest is history.

Aikman’s success in football is a testament to his determination, resilience, and love for the game. Despite the challenges he faced in high school, he never gave up and continued to push himself to be the best. And today, he is remembered as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

In conclusion, Aikman’s story serves as a valuable lesson for young athletes and coaches alike. It’s crucial to find a balance between sports and life, and to never let pressure overshadow the love and passion for the game. As Aikman himself said, “I played sports because I loved it, not because I wanted to be a professional athlete.” And that love and passion for the game is what ultimately led him to greatness.
