Draymond Green Calls Out NBA for Not Hurting Tanking Teams Financially: “I Get Fined When I Do Wrong”

The Sacramento Kings have had a rough season so far, sitting in 14th place in the Western Conference with a dismal record of 21-49. With no hope of making it to the playoffs, the team has been looking for ways to improve their future. And during Tuesday’s game against the Golden State Warriors, they made a bold move that raised eyebrows and sparked a conversation about the issue of tanking in the NBA.

During the final minutes of the game, the Kings deliberately fouled Seth Curry, a move that was clearly aimed at draining the clock and securing better draft odds for the team. This strategy, known as tanking, has become increasingly common in the NBA as teams with no chance of making it to the playoffs use it as a way to improve their chances in the draft lottery. However, this tactic has been met with criticism from players, coaches, and fans alike.

One of the most vocal critics of tanking is Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green, who called out the NBA for not punishing teams for tanking. In a post-game interview, Green said, “I don’t think the league should be able to fine us for things that make the product better. But I get fined for something that I did wrong. That’s kind of the head-scratcher.” Green’s comments highlight the double standard that exists when it comes to tanking in the NBA.

Green’s frustration is understandable, as players are often fined for actions that are deemed detrimental to the league’s image. Yet, tanking, which goes against the spirit of competition, is not punished. It not only affects the integrity of the game but also undermines the efforts of teams who are genuinely trying to win. As Green pointed out, “You’re telling your players it doesn’t matter if you win or lose. But then when you go out there and say, ‘Oh now it’s time to win, you’re competing for a playoff spot.’ Nah, we’re not. That’s fake.”

The issue of tanking has become more prevalent in recent years as the NBA has changed its draft lottery rules to discourage teams from purposely losing games. However, the system is far from perfect, and there are still plenty of loopholes that teams can exploit. The league needs to address this issue and come up with a more effective solution to ensure fair competition.

But the responsibility also falls on teams and their management to do the right thing and not resort to tanking. The Sacramento Kings’ decision to deliberately foul Curry was not only a poor display of sportsmanship but also a disservice to their fans and the league as a whole. Yes, the draft is important for a team’s future success, but it should not come at the cost of integrity and fair play.

As for Green, he has always been one to speak his mind and stand up for what he believes is right. His comments have sparked a conversation about the issue of tanking and put pressure on the league to take action. And while he may have received a fine for his actions on the court, his words carry weight and are necessary in bringing about change in the NBA.

In the end, the issue of tanking goes beyond just improving draft odds. It is about the spirit of competition, fairness, and the image of the NBA as a whole. The league needs to take a stand and address the issue, and teams need to prioritize winning and competing rather than taking the easy way out. As fans, we deserve to see teams giving their all on the court, and it’s time for the NBA to make that a reality.

The Sacramento Kings may be light-years away from playoff contention, but they have an opportunity to make a statement and show that they are a team that values integrity and sportsmanship. As for the league, it’s time to take a hard look at the issue of tanking and come up with a solution that promotes fair competition. The fans, players, and the integrity of the game deserve nothing less.
