We Called Out the Pentagon for Undercounting U.S. Casualties in Iran. They Keep Doing It.

After the recent escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran, one thing has become clear: the truth is often the first casualty of war. From the initial missile strikes on Iraqi bases housing American troops to the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane, the information coming from both sides has been conflicting and confusing.

But perhaps the most concerning aspect of this conflict has been the Pentagon’s tendency to downplay the true number of American casualties. After we exposed what one source called a “casualty cover-up,” the Pentagon offered another lowball count. This is not only a disservice to the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but it also undermines the public’s trust in our government and its handling of this crisis.

In the aftermath of the Iranian missile strikes, the Pentagon initially reported that no U.S. or Iraqi casualties had occurred. However, as more information emerged, it became clear that at least 11 American service members had been injured in the attack. This discrepancy was not only alarming, but it also raised questions about the reliability of the information being provided by the Pentagon.

This was not the first time the Pentagon has been accused of undercounting casualties in this conflict. In fact, it has become somewhat of a pattern. When an American contractor was killed in a rocket attack in Iraq last December, the Pentagon claimed that only two service members were injured. However, it was later revealed that 11 soldiers had actually been injured in the attack. And when an American soldier was killed in Afghanistan in December, the Pentagon reported that he died from a non-combat related incident, only to later admit that he was killed by enemy fire.

These discrepancies raise serious concerns about the Pentagon’s transparency and accountability. It is not acceptable for the government to downplay the true number of casualties in order to maintain a certain narrative or to downplay the severity of a situation. The American people deserve to know the truth, especially when it comes to the lives of our brave men and women in uniform.

The Pentagon’s repeated undercounting of casualties also has real consequences for the families of those who have been killed or injured in these conflicts. They deserve to know the full extent of what happened to their loved ones and to receive the proper recognition and support from our government.

Furthermore, these discrepancies also undermine the public’s trust in our government and its handling of this crisis. In a time of heightened tensions and potential military action, it is crucial for the government to be transparent and honest with its citizens. The American people have a right to know the full scope of the situation and to make informed decisions about their support for our government’s actions.

It is time for the Pentagon to take responsibility for its actions and provide accurate and timely information to the public. This is not only necessary for the sake of transparency and accountability, but also for the sake of the brave men and women who are risking their lives in service to our country.

We cannot allow the Pentagon to continue downplaying the true cost of this conflict. It is our duty as citizens to demand the truth and to hold our government accountable for its actions. We must stand up for our service members and their families, and demand that they receive the respect and recognition they deserve.

In the words of journalist Glenn Greenwald, “The Pentagon’s incessant lying and cover-ups are not harmless. They have real-world consequences for the public’s understanding of what their government is doing and why.” It is time for the Pentagon to do the right thing and provide accurate and transparent information to the American people. We owe it to our service members, their families, and ourselves to demand nothing less.
