‘My council house is damp, mouldy and the walls turn to rivers when it rains’

Living in a tropical country has its perks – warm weather, lush greenery, and beautiful beaches. But with the beauty also comes challenges, one of which is the unpredictable weather. We are used to dealing with sudden rain showers, but what happens when it’s a bit windy as well? Well, my kitchen wall turns into a river.

Yes, you read that right. There’s a hole in the tiles above my kitchen, and whenever it rains with a bit of wind, my kitchen wall becomes a river. At first, it was a funny and unique experience. I would jokingly say that I have a natural waterfall in my kitchen. But as time went by and the hole remained, it became more of a nuisance than a novelty.

You might be wondering, why haven’t I fixed the hole? Well, I have tried, trust me. I’ve consulted with different contractors, tried different remedies, but nothing seems to work. The hole just keeps coming back. So, I’ve learned to live with it, but it has also taught me a few valuable lessons.

Firstly, I’ve learned to be resourceful. Whenever it rains, I have to quickly move all the furniture and appliances in my kitchen away from the wall. I’ve become a pro at improvising and finding ways to divert the water away from the wall. It’s not always a perfect solution, but it gets the job done. This experience has also made me appreciate the small things, like having a dry kitchen during a rainstorm.

Secondly, it has taught me to be patient. Every time it rains, I have to deal with the same situation, and it can be frustrating. But I’ve learned that sometimes things are just out of our control, and all we can do is wait for the storm to pass. It has taught me to be more patient and to focus on finding a solution instead of getting worked up over something I can’t change.

But most importantly, it has taught me to find the silver lining in every situation. Yes, my kitchen wall becomes a river, but it’s also a reminder of the beautiful unpredictability of nature. It’s a reminder to appreciate the little things in life and not take them for granted. It’s a reminder to find humor in even the most frustrating situations.

I’ve also come to realize that this hole in my tiles is a part of my home’s unique character. It’s a reminder of the imperfections that make something truly special. Just like how our flaws and quirks make us who we are, this hole adds character to my kitchen. And instead of trying to cover it up, I’ve learned to embrace it.

Of course, I do hope that one day I’ll be able to fix this hole once and for all. But until then, I choose to see it as a reminder to be resourceful, patient, and to find the silver lining in every situation. The next time I hear the rain and feel a bit of wind, I’ll just smile and say, “time for my kitchen to become a river again.”

In conclusion, living with a hole in the tiles above my kitchen has been quite the experience. It has tested my patience, pushed me to be resourceful, and reminded me to find the good in every situation. As much as I would love to have a dry kitchen during a rainstorm, I’ve come to appreciate this unique feature of my home. It’s these imperfections that make life interesting, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
